HTC-Highroad (previously Team Columbia-HTC , Team Columbia-High Road and Team High Road ) was a cycling team sponsored by the Taiwanese manufacturer of smartphones and PDAs HTC and based in San Luis Obispo, California .

history

From 1991 to 2003, financed by the sponsor Deutsche Telekom , the team started under the name Team Telekom , until 2007 as the T-Mobile team , named after the mobile communications subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom T-Mobile .

In 2007, the multimillionaire Bob Stapleton took over the management of the T-Mobile team with his operating company Neue Straßen Sport GmbH , a subsidiary of High Road Sports Inc. , which he owns. The main sponsor T-Mobile had previously announced that they wanted to part with Olaf Ludwig Cycling GmbH , the previous operator of Team T-Mobile. Stapleton was supposed to restructure the team after the doping scandals ( doping scandal Fuentes , doping scandal Team Telekom ) and lead it back to success.

On November 27, 2007, the Board of Management of Deutsche Telekom announced that the mobile phone subsidiary T-Mobile would end its cycling activities with immediate effect. The trigger for this was the doping case of T-Mobile driver Patrick Sinkewitz in the run-up to the 2007 Tour de France . The decision affected both the men's and women's teams . According to the press release, the contract between T-Mobile and the operating company “Neuer Straßen Sport GmbH” under the direction of Bob Stapleton was terminated by “mutual agreement”. The contract was originally supposed to run until the end of 2010.

High Road Sports Inc. then took over the operation of the men's team under its own name and received a provisional ProTeam license on December 4, 2007 . As a result, Bob Stapleton won new name sponsors for the team: first in the course of the 2008 season, the US leisure clothing company Columbia Sportswear and from 2009 HTC . Since January 1, 2011, the team is called HTC-Highroad, as Columbia ended the sponsorship of the team.

On August 4, 2011, Bob Stapleton announced that the HTC-Highroad team would be disbanded at the end of the 2011 season. The reason he gave was that no new potential sponsor had been found who was willing to support the team at the previous level. The previous main sponsor HTC ended its commitment at the end of the year.

The greatest successes of the team included the overall classification victories of the Tour de France 1996 by Bjarne Riis and the Tour de France 1997 by Jan Ullrich , as well as numerous Tour de France stage victories, especially by Mark Cavendish , who also won the classic Milan-San for the team Remo won in 2009.
