history

The company's history began with the Jewish textile manufacturer Paul Lamfrom, who recognized the plans of the Nazis early on and fled Germany in 1937. He gave up his business in Augsburg, then Germany's largest shirt factory, and fled with his family to Portland, Oregon.

There Paul and Marie Lamfrom founded Columbia Sportswear in 1938 as the Columbia Hat Company . The small family business initially only produced hats . The nearby Columbia River was the inspiration for the company name. Problems with suppliers ultimately caused the company to switch to producing everything from fashion goods to fishing vests, shirts - and everything that was available in the 1940s in "outdoor clothing".

Ten years later, Paul and Marie Lamfrom's daughter , Gertrude "Gert" Boyle (1924–2019), who was born in Augsburg , took over the company and held the executive position together with her husband Neal. Neal died in 1970, so that Gert and Neal's son, Tim Boyle, joined the management of the company. This saved Columbia Sportswear from imminent bankruptcy . Various novel functions in Columbia fashion ensured an extreme boom and growth of the plant.

The well-known brands Sorel, Mountain Hardwear, Pacific Trail and Montrail are now also part of the group.

Engagement in cycling

The company sponsored the cycling team Team Columbia , which emerged from Team Telekom (since 2003 Team T-Mobile ). Columbia Sportswear began sponsoring on July 5, 2008 with the team's start in the 2008 Tour de France ; it was initially dated three years. Both the men's and women's teams were sponsored. Since January 1st, 2011 the team is called HTC-Highroad , because Columbia ended the sponsorship.
