The 15th stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 17th led over 192.5 kilometers from Limoux to Montpellier . On this flat stage there was a sprint classification and a mountain classification in the 4th category. 170 of the 198 registered drivers started.

Race course

Shortly after the start, Mickaël Delage initiated another breakaway group and pulled Niki Terpstra , Samuel Dumoulin , Michail Ignatjew and Anthony Delaplace with them. They quickly gained a lead of over three minutes on the field led by HTC-Highroad before it increased the pace again. Several drivers drove out and the distance remained stable. As a result, it initially fell slightly, but then the outliers achieved a maximum advantage of four minutes. Ignatjew won the mountain classification, the intermediate sprint Delage just ahead of Dumoulin. The intermediate sprint of the field was won by Mark Cavendish in front of José Joaquín Rojas and Philippe Gilbert . The lead of the outliers was now just over a minute.

Ignatiev left his escapees behind with 22 kilometers to go, but Terpstra caught up with him. While the three pursuers were swallowed up by the field shortly afterwards, the two stayed ahead for a while. Terpstra also left the Russians behind a few kilometers from the finish and was subsequently named the most combative driver, while the Russian was placed six kilometers from the finish. Then Gilbert attacked and caught up with Terpstra three kilometers from the finish. He was followed by Anthony Roux and Marco Marcato . However, this attempt to escape was soon over and Danilo Hondo sat at the head of the field, where the Sky ProCycling team also showed up. In the final sprint, Cavendish finally prevailed again against his rivals Tyler Farrar and Alessandro Petacchi and thus celebrated his fourth stage win of this tour.
