The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2011 on July 4th led over 198 km from Olonne-sur-Mer to Redon . As in every stage of this Tour de France, there was a sprint classification on the flat stage, as well as a 4th category mountain classification. All 198 registered drivers started.

Race course

Right at the beginning of the stage, a quintet made up of Rubén Pérez , José Iván Gutiérrez , Maxime Bouet , Niki Terpstra and Mickaël Delage , who were able to pull out a lead of over eight minutes. Delage, who was later also recognized as the most combative driver, won the intermediate sprint. In the field, Omega Pharma-Lotto attracted the sprint to the intermediate sprint, which Mark Cavendish was the first to pass.

As a result, the lead over the outliers shrank again as other teams picked up speed. Of the outliers, Delage was able to achieve the only mountain point of the day that was extended on the bridge over the Loire estuary. The field split up there into several parts, but later joined together again. Gutiérrez and Delage were able to stay in front of the field up to about nine kilometers from the finish, while their three companions had been caught a little earlier.

The HTC Highroad Team attracted the finish sprint until the Garmin-Cervélo team got involved. The victory went to Tyler Farrar and dedicated it to his friend Wouter Weylandt, who died at this year's Giro .
