The Saint-Nazaire Bridge ( fr. : Pont de Saint-Nazaire ) is an over the river Loire leading cable-stayed bridge between Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Brevin-les-Pins on the west coast of France . The bridge is located at the mouth of the Loire in the Atlantic Ocean . The bridge, built in 1974, was opened to traffic on October 18, 1975 and was at that time the cable-stayed bridge with the world's largest span . The structure is part of the Route départementale RD 213 ("Route Bleue") and is used as a road bridge .
Description and dates
The bridge is 3,356 meters long. Except for the pillars, the main bridge is a steel structure. It is 720 meters long and its span between the two pylons is 404 meters. The two side fields have field widths of 158 meters each. The maximum headroom for ships is 61 meters in the low tide, with the roadway at a height of 67 meters. The two red and white painted steel pylons stand on reinforced concrete pillars and each 68 meters long, they reach a height of 131 meters above low tide. They run in a Λ-shape from the lane to the top. The track support the bridge, 14.8 meters wide and up to 3.4 meter high steel box is held by each 18 tufts tensioned to the top of the pylons stay cables. The diameters of the ropes are 72 millimeters to 105 millimeters.
The main bridge is connected to the mainland by a northern and a southern ramp bridge. The total of 52 support pillars have a standard spacing of 50.70 meters. These approach bridges were built as so-called girder bridges , with prefabricated parts made of prestressed concrete being used for the superstructure .
The steel main bridge is painted light blue. In 1998, 2002 and 2004 stay cables of the bridge were replaced and lastly the paint was renewed.
traffic
The speed limit on the bridge is 70 km / h. Use of certain vehicles (e.g. caravan teams) may be temporarily prohibited in strong winds. The road is divided into three lanes, two of which lead upwards and one downwards. A lane change takes place in the middle of the bridge. The bridge, with its ramps that are up to 5.6 percent steep, is open to bicycle traffic; there is no separate cycle lane intended exclusively for cyclists .
