The 6th stage of the 2011 Tour de France on July 7th led over 226.5 km from Dinan to Lisieux . It was the longest stage of this year's event. There was a sprint classification on the stage, as well as two mountain classifications in the 3rd category and one in the 4th category. The stage winner was the Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen with his first ever stage win in the Tour de France. 194 of the 198 registered drivers started.

Race course

Shortly after the start, an escape group initiated by Lieuwe Westra was formed, which was joined by Anthony Roux , Leonardo Duque , Adriano Malori and Johnny Hoogerland . Further breakaway attempts were unsuccessful. The top group reached the first mountain classification with over eleven minutes ahead of the field, where Hoogerland dared an attack to take over the dotted jersey . Then the chase began in the field, which melted the lead again.

In the sprint of the field in the intermediate sprint, Mark Cavendish prevailed against José Joaquín Rojas. The sprint classification had previously been won by Anthony Roux, who was also the first to cross the line in the second mountain classification, followed by Hoogerland. Then attacked Lieuwe Westra, who won the third mountain classification. Adriano Malori was the only one to follow, while the others were caught again by the field. Finally Westra gave up and Malori drove alone at the front, who was then also recognized as the most combative driver. He was only caught three kilometers from the finish. Jelle Vanendert and Thomas Voeckler then tried to get away on the final climb, but were caught up again.

In the sprint, Edvald Boasson Hagen from Team Sky ProCycling finally prevailed against Matthew Goss and Thor Hushovd .
