Wouter Weylandt (born September 27, 1984 in Ghent ; † May 9, 2011 in Mezzanego ) was a Belgian racing cyclist .
Life
Wouter Weylandt won the U23 event of the GP Waregem in 2004 . In autumn he drove for Quick Step-Innergetic as a stagiaire and got a professional contract with the UCI ProTeam for the next season. In 2005 he won the Belgian GP Briek Schotte . At the ENECO Tour 2006 he finished third in the mass sprint on one stage, four seconds behind the runaway Manuel Quinziato . He celebrated his greatest successes with stage wins at the Vuelta a España 2008 and the Giro d'Italia 2010 .
For the 2011 season, Weylandt moved from Quick Step to the newly founded Leopard Trek team .
Deadly accident
On May 9, 2011, Weylandt had a serious fall during the Giro d'Italia on the descent from Passo del Bocco around 25 kilometers before the finish of the third stage in Rapallo . While he was orienting himself backwards to make sure of the current racing situation, he brushed against a wall with the left pedal or the left handlebar and was thrown about 20 meters to the other side of the street, where he collided with another object. Weylandt suffered a fracture of the base of the skull and died at the accident site despite attempts to resuscitate immediately.

He was in a relationship with his partner An-Sophie De Graeve until his death. She gave birth to their daughter Alizée on September 1, 2011.
