course

The 5.8 km long start of the tour in Den Helder was won by the German Stefan Schumacher from the Gerolsteiner team , who completed the course in exactly 7:00 minutes. George Hincapie and Joost Posthuma followed in the following places, one second behind . As the best sprinter, world champion Tom Boonen was fifth, four seconds behind.

On the 176.9 km long flat stage from Wieringerwerf to Hoogeveen , a top group of three with Koen Barbé , Matthé Pronk and Rik Reinerink was in the lead up to 12 km from the finish . They had cleared a hundred kilometers from their destination and after about 40 kilometers had escaped, they had achieved a maximum advantage of six minutes. Belgian world champion Tom Boonen secured the day's victory in the mass sprint and at the same time took the lead in the overall standings thanks to the time credit at the finish. Second place went to the Italian Simone Cadamuro ahead of his compatriot Enrico Gasparotto .

A top trio led by Carlos Zárate , Carlos Abellán and Paul Martens up to 20 km . But their breakaway attempt with a maximum of about three minutes lead ended early 15 kilometers from the finish. After that, some drivers tried again to break away from the field. Manuel Quinziato made a successful breakaway attempt about two kilometers from the finish . He secured victory four seconds ahead of Simone Cadamuro and Wouter Weylandt .

On the 185 km long stage from Beek in the Netherlands to Westmalle in Belgium , shortly after the start, a top group of four formed around Gorka González , who were overtaken 15 kilometers from the finish. So it came on the home straight to the mass sprint, which Tom Boonen won ahead of Max van Heeswijk and Baden Cooke . With his win, Boonen slightly increased his lead in the overall standings with a ten-second time bonus.

The US American George Hincapie won the 16.1 kilometer individual time trial around Landgraaf . He mastered the winding course in 19:58 minutes. Vincenzo Nibali crossed the finish line in second place eight hundredths of a second behind him . The German Stefan Schumacher crossed the finish line in third, seven seconds behind. Hincapie took the lead in the overall standings with 0:03 minutes ahead of Schumacher. Nibali took third place in the overall standings, 0:11 minutes behind. There were no changes at the top for the other ratings.

For a long time, the 181.7 kilometer stage from Hasselt to Balen was dominated by a seven-man breakaway group. In the mass sprint, world champion Tom Boonen won for the third time in front of Julian Dean and Simone Cadamuro . Before the stage, Juan Carlos Domínguez was excluded from the race by the Unibet.com team because he did not appear at a blood test carried out by the UCI before the start of the stage.

The penultimate 211.7 kilometer stage from Bornem to Sint-Truiden was dominated by an outlier quartet. Mario Aerts , Grégory Rast , Andoni Aranaga and Sebastian Langeveld had a maximum lead of more than four minutes and were taken off the peloton 2.2 km from the finish. In the subsequent mass sprint, David Kopp won ahead of Marco Zanotti and Philippe Gilbert .

Philippe Gilbert won the final 199.7 kilometer royal stage with start and finish in Ans . Schumacher secured the red jersey with the four second time bonus for third place and won the tour by one second over Hincapie and twelve seconds over Nibali. He also won the yellow jersey for victory in the junior category , while Simone Cadamuro won the white jersey in the points category with one point ahead of Tom Boonen . Influenced by a spectator, Schumacher drove a wave that led to the fall of the previously overall leader Hincapie. After examining the facts, the jury awarded Schumacher the victory.
