During the Second World War , the Japanese built a runway that served as a rally point to Guadalcanal . The runway was discovered by the Americans on December 3, 1942 and the first bombing was carried out on December 9 by Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. Nevertheless, despite regular air and sea bombing, the Japanese were still able to use them. During the Battle of New Georgia in 1943, the orbit was captured by the Americans on August 6th. The runway still exists today and is used for daily flights to and from Honiara and Gizo.
