Port of Gizo

Gizo is a place in the island nation of the Solomon Islands , in the southwestern Pacific Ocean . It is the capital and largest town of the Western Province . Gizo is located 380 km northwest of the capital Honiara .

geography

Gizo is located on the small island of Ghizo in the west of the New Georgia Archipelago , from which it differs in spelling but not pronunciation.

tourism

Gizo is mainly known to tourists as a diving destination because of the tropical underwater world and the numerous shipwrecks from the Second World War .

Not far from Gizo is the island of Kasolo (Kennedy Island; formerly: Plum Pudding Island). John F. Kennedy and his crew stranded on this island in 1943 after their PT boat collided with a Japanese destroyer .

Off the coast of Gizo lies the wreck of the Toa Maru, a Japanese freighter that was sunk by the Americans during World War II and is in very good condition. There are two Japanese one-man tanks on board , sake bottles and building materials such as cement sacks. Due to the shallow depth, the wreck can also be dived by beginners.

Cruise ships call at Gizo from time to time .

traffic

Gizo has a runway on the small offshore island of Nusa Tupe . From here there is a daily connecting flight in 90 minutes to Honiara .

Natural disasters

In a tsunami with waves up to 10 meters high, triggered by an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale on April 2, 2007, all houses along the coast in Gizo were destroyed. The epicenter of the quake was around 40 kilometers southeast of Gizo or 350 kilometers west-northwest of the capital Honiara , the hypocenter at a depth of ten kilometers. In total, around 30 people were killed and around 900 houses destroyed on the archipelago, leaving around 5,000 people homeless .
