Ghizo is an island in the Western Province of the Pacific Island Republic of Solomon Islands . Her name is often confused with Gizo, the capital of the western province of the Solomon Islands.
geography
Ghizo is located in the west of the New Georgia Archipelago , a group of islands in the southern Solomon Islands . On the only 35 km² large, heavily forested island on the east coast is the capital Gizo of the Solomonic western province. It has around 6,000 inhabitants.
The neighboring islands are almost all larger with areas of 200 to 2000 km².
tourism
The island is mainly known to tourists as a diving destination because of the tropical underwater world and the numerous wrecks of ships and planes from the Second World War.
Near Ghizo is the island of Kasolo ( Kennedy Island ), on which the future US President John F. Kennedy and his crew were stranded in 1943 after their torpedo boat was sunk by a Japanese destroyer.
