Western is the island-richest province of the Pacific island state of Solomon Islands . It borders in the north on the islands of the neighboring state Papua New Guinea , in the east on the province of Isabel and in the south on the province of Central .
All islands of the province are geographically and geologically assigned to the chain of the Solomon Islands . The New Georgia Archipelago , Shortland Islands, and Treasury Islands are island groups in the Western Province. As the easternmost island, the isolated Mborokua belongs to the Western Province, but is closer to the Central Province .
The area of all islands is 5,475 km². Gizo , capital of the province, is located on Ghizo Island in the New Georgia Archipelago.
In 2009, almost 76,650 people lived on the islands of the Western Province.
