Temotu is the easternmost province of the Pacific island state of Solomon Islands .

location

It is located far away from the chain of Solomon Islands , which make up the other eight Solomonic provinces. The northernmost islands of the Temotu Province are located over 500 kilometers southeast of the Solomonic capital Honiara , but only 340 kilometers north of the islands of the neighboring state of Vanuatu . The Santa Cruz Islands with the Duff Islands and the Reef Islands belong to the Temotu province . The island of Tikopia is the southernmost inhabited island of the Solomon Islands. Even further south is the uninhabited Little Nottingham Islet in the Middle Reef of the Indispensable Reefs , which belong to the province of Rennell and Bellona . The total land area is almost 895 km². The provincial capital Lata is located on the west coast of the largest island Nendo (Santa Cruz Islands).

According to a World Bank report from 2007, the Temotu province has the highest number of natural disasters of any province in the Solomon Islands. A drought in 1952 and 1953, for example, left 17 dead on the island of Tikopia. Tsunamis and volcanic eruptions also occur in Temotu province, according to the World Bank report. In the last week of December 2002, cyclone Zoe caused major damage with winds of up to 305 km / h on the islands of Fatutaka , Anuta and Tikopia.

In the province of Temotu some animal and plant species are considered endemic regarded as the Kauri tree Agathis vitiensis , the Skink Emoia rufilabialis , the monochrome White-eye , the Sanford Brillenvogel , the Vanikoro White-eye and the Vanikoro Monarch .
