Nendo , or correctly Nendo , is the largest and most important of the Santa Cruz Islands . The island is located in the southeast of the group of Solomon Islands and is politically part of the west Pacific island state of the Solomon Islands (province: Temotu ).

Nendo has an area of 519 km². The highest point is 549 m above sea level. The island is also known as Santa Cruz, Ndeni, Nitendi or Ndende known. Lata is the capital of the island and the province. The province's only airport is also located there.
In the north-west of Nando is the small island of Malo , in the south-east is Nibanga , about one kilometer away.
history
The name "Santa Cruz" was given to the island by the Spanish navigator Álvaro de Mendaña De Neira in 1595 , who tried unsuccessfully to found a colony there. The attempt was abandoned due to hostility from local tribes and malaria . Mendaña died of malaria on October 18, 1595 on the island.
Population and culture
The majority of the population of Nendo consists of Melanesians . In the 2009 census, 9,008 inhabitants were counted.
Red feather money was used to pay for on Nendo . Until recently, this was the traditional means of payment for the bride price . The Red feather money consists of 5 cm wide and 9 meters long glued red stripes from the feathers of local bird Myzomela carnalis that to the family of honeyeater belongs.
The Santa Cruz language belongs to the Austronesian language family .

From time to time Nendo is called by cruise ships whose passengers are introduced to the island's folklore.
