Christophe Bassons (born June 10, 1974 in Mazamet , Département Tarn ) is a French cyclist .

Career

He began his career in 1991 as a mountain biker and became a road professional in 1996 with the Force Sud cycling team , later at Festina , before joining the La Française des Jeux team in 1999 . In 2000 and 2001 he drove for Jean Delatour .

He was also part of the Festina team during the doping scandal at the 1998 Tour de France , in which, however, he did not take part. Teammates at the time are said to have confirmed that Bassons was the only driver of the Festina team to use any prohibited substances; According to other sources, Patrice Halgand and Laurent Lefèvre are said to have been unencumbered alongside him .

In 1999 he broke off the Tour de France under pressure from the peloton . At that time he was considered to be a polluter because, in the opinion of many professionals, he presented himself as the "only clean man" in his daily column. Lance Armstrong in particular criticized him in a press conference: "If he thinks that cycling works like this, he's wrong and it is better that he go home."

In 2001 Bassons ended his career as a road cyclist and took over a job as a sports teacher in triathlon .

In the next few years he took part in mountain bike races. In October 2012 Bassons was banned from the French cycling federation FFC for a year because he missed a doping control at the national championships in mountain bike marathon . He stated that he had already given up on the race and been on the motorway when he was drawn for doping control. The ban has been reduced to one month. In 2013, he was acquitted in the appeal hearing.
