Santiago Pérez Fernández (born August 5, 1977 in Grado ) is a former Spanish cyclist .

Athletic career

Santiago Pérez began his career in 2001 with the Portuguese cycling team Barbot-Torrie . In his first year he was able to win one stage of the Tour of Portugal . He then moved to Kelme-Costa Blanca , where he stayed for a year before joining the Swiss racing team Phonak .

Santi Pérez started twice in the Tour de France . In 2002 he gave up after the eleventh stage, in 2004 he finished 49th in the overall ranking.

At the Vuelta a España 2004 , Pérez won a mountain finish and two time trials last week. He finished second in the overall standings and came within 30 seconds of the winner Roberto Heras . During the Vuelta, however, like his teammate Tyler Hamilton, he tested positive for foreign blood doping and was banned for two years. After the ban Pérez signed a contract with the Spanish professional Continental Team Relax-Gam for the 2007 season . In 2011 he ended his career.
