Waldbrunn is to Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis in Baden-Wuerttemberg belonging municipality . It belongs to the European metropolitan region of Rhine-Neckar (until May 20, 2003 the Lower Neckar region and until December 31, 2005 the Rhine-Neckar-Odenwald region ). The community is about 10 km from Eberbach and 15 km from Mosbach . The municipal administration is located in the Strümpfelbrunn district .

geography

location

Waldbrunn lies at the foot of the Katzenbuckels , the highest elevation in the Odenwald. The landscape is characterized by small plateaus and valleys. More than 55 percent of the municipal area is forested.

Community structure

The community of Waldbrunn consists of the former communities of Mülben , Oberdielbach , Schollbrunn , Strümpfelbrunn , Waldkatzenbach and Weisbach . The Max-Wilhelmshöhe hunting lodge , now a forester's house, belongs to Mülben . Oberdielbach includes the place “Maisental, Siedlung” and the Post farm (upper and lower). The Jagdhütte and Talmühle houses belong to Schollbrunn. The Höllgrund homestead (Oberhöllgrund) belongs to Strümpfelbrunn. The Unterhöllgrund homestead belongs to Waldkatzenbach. House Weisbacher Mühle belongs to Weisbach.

In the area of the former municipality of Mülben are the desert areas of Ober- and Unterferdinandsdorf.

climate

Waldbrunn is a state-approved climatic health resort in the Neckartal-Odenwald nature park . Climatically, Waldbrunn can be assigned to the mountain climates. The frequent light wind is noticeable, which is why the region around the Katzenbuckel is also called a breath of winter.

history

The places on the plateau east of the Neckar Valley that are united in the municipality of Waldbrunn are cleared settlements from the late settlement period in the high Middle Ages. Most, if not all of the places were founded by the Lords of Zwingenberg, who sat at Zwingenberg Castle . Your coat of arms with the three swan necks can be found in the coats of arms of five of the six Waldbrunn districts. Monks of the Mosbach monastery may also be considered as founders of Schollbrunn ; after all, Weisbach could also be an older Franconian foundation. The place Mülben probably goes back to an abandoned mill east of today's village.

With the exception of Schollbrunn, which came to the Count Palatine as early as the 14th century, the places share the history of the Zwingenberg rule and came into the possession of the Lords of Hirschhorn in 1404 , after their extinction in the 18th century to the Göler von Ravensburg and from them through sale to the Electoral Palatinate . In legal terms, the places all belonged to the Zent Eberbach . To the east of Mülben ran the border to Zent Mudau and thus to Kurmainz , there with the Heerhag still a border fortification made of wall and ditch has been preserved.

The largest and most important of the places was Strümpfelbrunn, where there was a chapel early on, which became the mother church for the branches in some of the other parts of Waldbrunn today, and where from 1521 a fair , privileged by Emperor Charles V, took place. There was also an important old church in Schollbrunn, which was removed from the rule of Zwingenberg at an early stage; as a destination for a pilgrimage, it could even have given rise to the foundation of the surrounding town.

The unfortified places suffered particularly badly during the Thirty Years' War . After the war, the depopulated country was repopulated mainly by Swiss Protestants who had been recruited by Elector Karl Friedrich. The Swiss made a special contribution to the repopulation of Mülben, which is popularly known as Little Switzerland .

In Strümpfelbrunn there was once a Jewish community, which had its highest membership in 1860 with 27 families, but had already degenerated into insignificance due to the emigration to the industrialized cities in the late 19th century up to the time of National Socialism with five families.

Population development of Waldbrunn (Odenwald)

In 1939 there were 550 inhabitants in Oberdielbach, at the end of 1945 there were 664. During the same period, the population in Schollbrunn fell from 706 to 543, in Strümpfelbrunn it rose from 538 to 654, in Waldkatzenbach from 483 to 688, in Weisbach from 355 to 409 and in Mülben from 265 to 294.

On January 1, 1973, Oberdielbach, Schollbrunn, Strümpfelbrunn, Waldkatzenbach and Weisbach were combined to form the new municipality of Waldbrunn. On January 1, 1975, Mülben was incorporated.

The Unechte Teilorteschahl guarantees the districts a fixed number of seats: from Strümpfelbrunn, Oberdielbach and Waldkatzenbach there are at least four each, from Schollbrunn, Weisbach and Mülben at least two councilors each.

The 2019 local elections led to the following result (in brackets: difference to 2014):

The fir and the well refer talking on the place name. The six tips of the fir tree are reminiscent of the six districts.

Waldbrunn has been in partnership with Kobersdorf in Burgenland , Austria, since 1989 . There is also a very close relationship with Freyming-Merlebach in Lorraine , France.

Culture and sights

Hindenburg column
  • The Neckar-Odenwald-Limes , a World Heritage Site since 2005, runs along the eastern edge of the district.
  • The Catholic Church in Strümpfelbrunn is the original church of the place and was the mother church of other churches in the community. It goes back to an old chapel. In the immediate vicinity was also the old Protestant church of the village, which was used for various purposes until 1975 after the construction of the current Protestant church and was then demolished.
  • The Protestant church in Strümpfelbrunn was built from 1914 to 1916 according to plans by Emil Döring and was consecrated on March 25, 1917. Together with the neighboring rectory, which was built at the same time, the ensemble forms a rare example of a group building from that time. The ensemble is a cultural monument , the church was extensively renovated from 1978 to 1995.
  • The Evangelical Church of Oberdielbach was built in 1902/03.
  • The Protestant church in Schollbrunn goes back to the Middle Ages. The inside of the massive choir tower is dated to 1367 and contains medieval frescoes. The nave was rebuilt in its present form in 1736/39.
  • The Catholic chapel in Schollbrunn was built in 1982/84 through the renovation of the old Catholic schoolhouse, which was now used as a residential building, to which a chapel room had been added as early as 1778.
  • The Protestant church in Waldkatzenbach was built in 1747/48 with the support of the Göler von Ravensburg family , whose coat of arms is in the pulpit.
  • The village linden of Waldkatzenbach, surrounded by a well system, dates from the time after the Thirty Years War and is therefore around 350 years old. It is a natural monument .
  • The Evangelical Church of Weisbach was built in 1955.
  • There are five historical stone crosses in the district of Weisbach .
  • There is a spa park in Mülben, and Germany's only mare's milk farm is also located there with the Hoher Odenwald spa stud . A private museum on site displays historical agricultural implements.
  • The Hindenburg column near the Katzenbuckel thermal baths between Strümpfelbrunn and Oberdielbach commemorates the participation of General Field Marshal and later Reich President Paul von Hindenburg in an autumn maneuver on the Winter Hauch in 1901. The 9 m high sandstone column with a fire bowl was built in 1927 by surrounding communities and military associations .
  • The observation tower on the Katzenbuckel offers a panoramic view of the community and the wooded peaks and ridges of the Odenwald from its observation platform at a height of 18 m.
  • The rock house of the Hölzerlips ( 49 ° 29 ′ 8 ″ N, 9 ° 5 ′ 47 ″ E ), a rock formation made of larger boulders ( outcrop ) at an altitude of 530 meters above sea level. NN and consisting of the weathering remains of a particularly hard, silicified red sandstone layer (main scree horizon) can be seen in the Margrave Forest. It got its name from the band of robbers Winter Hauchbande around the robber Georg Philipp Lang, who is known as Holzlips and who is said to have used the area as a shelter . The stone table is located on a spider road a few dozen meters south. To the north of it in the direction of Reisenbacher Grund is the abandoned village of Unterferdinandsdorf , of which ruins can still be seen.
  • In the north in the district of Mülben (to the west, connected to Mülben by the 3.6 km long forest road Markgrafenstraße ), the hunting lodge Max-Wilhelmshöhe, protected as a cultural monument, is located on the site of the also abandoned village of Oberferdinandsdorf .

Economy and Infrastructure

Katzenbuckel-Therme

A large number of small businesses characterize the economic structure of Waldbrunn. The location of the districts on the heights of the Odenwald and away from the federal trunk road network inhibits the development of larger companies. Many agricultural part-time businesses have survived for this. The largest employer is the Gerd Mosca machine factory , one of the largest strapping machine manufacturers in the world.

Another important source of income is tourism. Waldbrunn is a state-approved climatic health resort with numerous private holiday apartments and apartments as well as a holiday complex (holiday village). In addition to those looking for recreation, many guests from European countries also come to the community. A prominent excursion destination is the Katzenbuckel (626 m above sea level), the highest elevation in the Odenwald, with its hiking trails and winter sports facilities (trails, toboggan slope).

The on-site Katzenbuckel-Therme is a bath with several swimming pools (also outdoor pools), sauna, steam bath and a restaurant.

In Waldbrunn there is a primary school, the Winterhauch School , which also cooperates with the Schwarzbach School, the special needs education and counseling center . There are three kindergartens in the village in the districts of Oberdielbach, Strümpfelbrunn and Waldkatzenbach.
