Mülben is a district of the municipality Waldbrunn in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The Reisenbacher Grund , today a protected landscape area
Ruins of the abandoned village Unterferdinandsdorf

Mülben is located in the southeastern part of the Odenwald in its red sandstone area on the Winterhauch , an elongated plateau that culminates 4.2 km further west in the highest mountain in the Odenwald, the Katzenbuckel ( 626.8  m ). The location is on the upper reaches of the Höllbach , which cuts deep into the sandstone formations of the Odenwald immediately after leaving the location to the northwest and unites with the same shortly before the confluence of the Reisenbach in the Itter near Antonslust . The headwaters of the Höllbach are dammed around one kilometer east of the village at an altitude of 530 m to form the Mülbener See, which covers around one hectare .

The highest point of Mülben is around one and a half kilometers north of the town of the Markgrafenwald ( 584.5  m ). Beyond the Markgrafenwald, the district drops steeply into the Reisenbacher Grund . At the lower part of the slope was the village Unterferdinandsdorf , which was dissolved around 1850 and ruins of which can still be seen in the forest. In the north-west of the district, connected to Mülben by the 3.6 km long forest road Markgrafenstraße , the hunting lodge Max-Wilhelmshöhe, protected as a cultural monument, is located at the site of the also abandoned village of Oberferdinandsdorf .

The district of Mülben covers 874 hectares, 647 hectares of which are forested.

Strümpfelbrunn , the main town in the Waldbrunn community, is just under one and a half kilometers west of Mülben. In the south, the district Weisbach is neighboring and in the east is Wagenschwend , a district of Limbach .

history

The existence of the village can be traced back to 1328 when the Lords of Zwingenberg founded it . The name Mülben developed from the earlier forms of the name Mul (wen) Milwen and Mülwer , which means mill weir .

After the village in the Thirty Years' War to the deserted village was Elector Karl I. Ludwig recruit 1661 Swiss colonists who populated the place again. The popular designation Little Switzerland for Mülben, as well as the street name Schweizer Straße, are reminiscent of the immigrants.

From January 1, 1975, the community of Mülben joined the community of Waldbrunn, which had been founded two years earlier by the neighboring communities.

Transport and infrastructure

The district road K 3928 runs through Mülben as a loop, which connects the town to the west and south with the state road L 524, which connects Eberbach with Mudau via the winter breath . To the south, the K 3928 will be extended as L 589 in the direction of Weisbach and Lohrbach .

In the center of Mülben is the spa park and in the south of the district, beyond the L 524 there is a glider airfield .
