Harald B. Schäfer

Harald B. Shepherd (* 20th July 1938 in Waldbrunn ; † 22. January 2013 in Offenburg ) was a German politician of the SPD .

education and profession

After graduating from high school in 1958, Schäfer studied history, German and political science at the universities of Heidelberg and Munich and graduated in 1966. Then he entered the school service in Baden-Württemberg as a student councilor and was later promoted to senior student council.

Political activity

Schäfer's political activities began in 1962 when he joined the SPD. In 1963 he was chairman of the Social Democratic Union (SHB) at the University of Heidelberg, from 1964 chairman of the Young Socialists in Heidelberg, from 1971 chairman of the SPD Heidelberg for one year and from 1973 to 1977 chairman of the district SPD Ortenau . From 1977 he was deputy state chairman of the SPD Baden-Württemberg for almost 20 years .

At the end of 1972, after the 1972 Bundestag elections , he entered the German Bundestag as a member of the SPD state list , to which he was a member until 1992. He gave up his teaching profession in 1972. In the Bundestag Schäfer was initially a member of the Interior Committee until 1987 and then until 1992 a member of the Committee for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety . Schäfer argued against nuclear energy, for speed limits and advocated the expansion of renewable energies early on. 1979 to 1982 he was a member, 1981 chairman of the study commission "Future Nuclear Energy Policy" of the German Bundestag, 1980–1988 member of the board, 1988 deputy chairman and 1988 chairman working group VI Environment and Energy of the SPD parliamentary group.

After the state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 1992 , a grand coalition took over the state government . Prime Minister Erwin Teufel appointed Schäfer to his cabinet . From June 11, 1992 to June 11, 1996 he was Minister for the Environment . After the state elections in 1996 , the CDU and the FDP / DVP formed a coalition; Schäfer thus lost his ministerial office. Shortly before the formation of the new state government , he announced the renunciation of his state parliament mandate . He took up his mandate for a short time and then resigned it on June 4, 1996 in favor of Christine Rudolf .

Schäfer left his wife Astrid, née Redecker, with whom he had been married since 1968, a daughter and a son.
