When strapping is called backing up packages with a fastener tape.

When strapping, the packages are first put together and wrapped with the strapping tape. Edge protection can be placed under the belt to protect the packages. The strap is then tensioned and secured with the help of a device called a strapping device .

Depending on the size of the packages, the required force and speed, either manual strapping devices are used, in which the strap is lashed by one person using a tensioning lever , or strapping machines are used that automate the process and can apply high forces. A plastic or steel strap is used as the strapping band, depending on the required strength. After tensioning, the lashed strap is secured and cut using clips, sleeves, seals or welding techniques .

Straps are made of steel , polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is inexpensive and has a particularly high tensile strength, but does not give in when the volume of the strapped packaged goods changes (for example, expanding wood). Due to its elasticity, PP is suitable for expanding packaged goods. Polyester is cheap, suitable for hand strapping tools and can be re-lashed. Steel straps are usually used for strapping very heavy goods, such as B. heavy machines, several, mostly long profiles (often steel and non-ferrous metals) or aluminum ingots. They have a higher breaking strength than plastic strapping.
