Erwin Pollack

Heino Richard Erwin Pollack (born November 9, 1863 in Geising , † November 23, 1915 in France ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Erwin Pollack was the second son of the doctor Ernst Pollack. He was born in the small Saxon town of Geising in the Ore Mountains and grew up in the nearby town of Dippoldiswalde from 1867 , where he attended the town school. In 1874 he went to Dresden to his grandparents and attended the first Gelincksche private institute, the Quarta the Royal Grammar School in Dresden-Neustadt and finally (from 1878) as an alumnus, the St. Augustine High School in Grimma . After graduation, Pollack served as a one-year volunteer with the Royal 8th Infantry Regiment "Prince Johann Georg" No. 107 in Leipzig. He took up his studies at the University of Leipzig , where he was particularly influenced by Otto Ribbeck . Pollack with him was on 23 July 1890, the thesis Hippodromica doctorate .

After the state examination in May 1891, Pollack completed his probationary year at the St. Thomas School in Leipzig . On August 15, 1892, he went to the St. Augustin grammar school in Grimma as vicar, where on April 1, 1893 he was promoted to "non-permanent scientific teacher". On October 1, 1894, he moved to the Princely and State School St. Afra in Meißen , where he was finally appointed senior teacher.

When the First World War broke out , Pollack volunteered. He served on the Western Front and died of cardiac arrest in France on November 23, 1915. His last rank was captain of the Landwehr . He was honored with the military service award.

In addition to his teaching activity, Pollack came out through several scientific writings. He was one of the first contributors to the Realencyclopedia of Classical Antiquity , for which he provided dozens of archaeological articles. In addition, he published several essays and a translation of Xenophon's work Peri hippikes (in the school program of the Princely School of St. Afra).
