Hindenburg column in Waldbrunn

The Hindenburg column in the Strümpfelbrunn district of the Waldbrunn community in the Neckar-Odenwald district of Baden was erected in 1927 by regional military associations. It reminds us that Paul von Hindenburg chose that spot as a maneuvering place in August 1901.

history

In August 1901, Paul von Hindenburg, as division commander, selected the highest point on the old Dielbacher Straße between Strümpfelbrunn and Oberdielbach as a place for a maneuver. The extensive plateau there below the Katzenbuckels offered ideal terrain for a maneuver and was otherwise also used for training exercises for the local fire brigade or as a starting point for carrier pigeon competitions.

The idea matured in the 1920s for a column-shaped monument at this point goes back to the Eberbach factory owner HA Gütschow and the regional military associations and found the support of the surrounding communities. The monument was planned by the architect H. Kontrollagel. In order to keep costs low , the workers of the Eberbach quarries who lived on the Winterhauch (Odenwald) were obliged to bring stones to the construction site on their way home. The monument was built from August to October 1927. The inauguration took place on Hindenburg's 80th birthday on October 2, 1927. The column was surrounded by a green area from a foundation of the Grand Ducal Forest Office in Zwingenberg .

description

The Hindenburg column is made of red sandstone from Eberbach , about nine meters high and 8.7 meters in circumference. Its foundation rests in a 70 centimeter high round base with a circumference of 26 meters, which is also faced on the outside with red sandstone. In the upper third of the column there is the name "Hindenburg" in large letters and underneath a bust of the honored one. The bust was donated by a spa guest in the 1950s and replaced the plaque that was originally there, but long since lost, with a portrait of Hindenburg.

A tablet under the bust indicates the purpose of the monument:

HONORING REICHSPRAESIDENT PAUL V. BENECKENDORFF AND HINDENBURG. THANKS TO THE PROTECTOR OF HOME, THE COMMUNITIES OF WINTERHAUCHES AND MILITARY ASSOCIATIONS OF THE NECKARGAU ESTABLISHED THIS PILLAR ON HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1927 ON THE SITE, WHERE HE TEENED AS DIVISION COMMANDER IN 1901.
