St. Johannes Nepomuk (Eberbach)

The St. Johannes Nepomuk Church is a Catholic church in Eberbach in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg . It was built between 1884 and 1887 and is the fourth church on this site. It is considered to be Eberbach's landmark.
history
The Eberbach parish belonged to the diocese of Würzburg and must therefore have been founded before the year 1000. The church was outside the city walls. In 1429 a new church was built in the city and the old church became a cemetery church. It was replaced by a new building in 1488 because it was in disrepair. In 1556, the Palatinate Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation . After a Catholic branch of the Wittelsbach family came to power again, there was a Simultaneum at the city church from 1698 to 1707 until it was awarded to the Reformed in the Palatinate church division and the Catholics received the cemetery church.
In the 18th century the church had become dilapidated. For this reason, a new baroque-style nave was built on the old tower by 1782 . Forty years later, however, damage caused by the damp subsoil was found again. After the cemetery was relocated in 1835, a new large church could be built. The plans came from Adolf Williard with the assistance of building inspector Wilhelm Lutz , the construction manager was the young Ludwig Maier . The construction was carried out between 1884 and 1887 and was consecrated like its predecessor Johannes Nepomuk .
The church was renovated in 1950 and 1970/71. Today the community belongs to the pastoral care unit Neckartal-Hoher Odenwald Edith Stein in the dean's office Mosbach-Buchen in the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

The St. Johannes Nepomuk Church is in the northeast of the city center. It is one of the few churches that was built in the neo-renaissance style. The east - facing three-aisled vaulted basilica has a distinctive double tower facade made of red sandstone. Above the main portal there are statues of the four evangelists with their symbols . Archangel Michael , the old church patron of Eberbach , is enthroned at the end of the front . All five statues were made by the sculptor Julius Seitz . The portals were created by Hermann Koziol in 1970 . They show scenes from the life of St. John Nepomuk and from the Bible.
The windows in the choir depict biblical scenes. They were designed in 1970 by Valentin Feuerstein . The ambo , celebration altar and weekday altar are made of shell limestone. Anton Kunz created the tabernacle in 1951 .

The organ was built in 1972 by Hans-Theodor Vleugels . In 2015 the sound of the instrument was redesigned by the Giengener organ manufacturer Gebr. Link and the Trefz company from Stuttgart and received a new console . With 56 registers spread over three manuals and pedal and around 3800 pipes , it is one of the largest organs in the northern Baden region. The organ's prospectus design goes back to the Eberbach architect and musician Gustav Rumstadt. The playing and stop actions are electric.

Peal
In the towers of St. Johannes Nepomuk hang 5 bronze bells, which were cast in 1954 by the bell foundry FW Schilling (Heidelberg). In 2004 the oak bell chairs were rebuilt.
