Fritz Herdi (born October 14, 1920 in Frauenfeld ; † March 18, 2014 in Zurich ; legal resident in Holziken ) was a Swiss musician , music teacher, radio presenter , journalist and writer .

Life

Fritz Herdi was the son of the grammar school teacher Ernst Herdi and the music teacher Cécile Herdi, born Krebser - and, as he himself emphasized, the grandson of two pastors. In 1939 he attended the hotel management school in Lucerne . Between his active military missions in World War II, he studied at the conservatory in Winterthur and worked as an entertainment pianist . From 1947 to 1962 he worked as a piano jazz teacher at the Zurich Music Academy and from 1957 to 1990 as a program designer for Swiss Radio DRS with his own programs such as Fyrabig ("Feierabend") and sheet music and notes .

From 1941 Herdi was also active as a journalist, from 1961 as a permanent employee of the satirical magazine Nebelspalter , 1965–1978 as an editor in the field, gastronomic critic and column writer for the Tages-Anzeiger , 1982–1995 gastronomic critic for the weekly newspaper Züri Woche and fifteen years leading gastronomic critic for the Pendo guide Zurich with pleasure for dinner . From the mid-1950s he published collections of words and sayings as well as anecdotes and humorous books on the language of the Zurich milieu. He also translated American music literature and autobiographies by American jazz musicians into German, for example by Jelly Roll Morton , Sidney Bechet and Benny Goodman .

Herdi looked, “following Luther's advice” (as the Tages-Anzeiger wrote in 2000), “the Zurichers on their feet” and also included expressions in his works that had sexual connotations and were therefore published much later, as well as such that have a discriminatory effect. His works received international attention. The literary and linguist Roland Ris describes Fritz Herdi's collections in the area of ​​the so-called street language as the best that existed before the Züri-Slängikon compiled by Domenico Blass .

Honor

Herdi received an honorary gift from the Zurich government council in 1985.
