Lioni is an Italian commune with 6130 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Avellino in the Campania region . The place in the Irpinia landscape is part of the Comunità Montana Alta Irpinia mountain community .

history

The place name appears for the first time as Leoni on the occasion of a donation in 883.

Lioni has been plagued by earthquakes time and again in its history. B. 1536, 1694 and most recently during the Irpinia earthquake in 1980 , in which several thousand people were killed in this area and numerous places were almost completely destroyed.

Lioni station is on the southern edge of the town on the Avellino – Rocchetta Sant'Antonio railway line, which is no longer used for passenger transport .
