Oplontis

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79.

Oplontis was an ancient place on the site of today's Torre Annunziata near Pompeii in the Italian region of Campania . It is shown on the Tabula Peutingeriana . Otherwise little is known about the settlement that was buried in AD 79 by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius .

In 1964 a very well-preserved villa , richly decorated with wall paintings, was excavated here, which is attributed to Poppaea Sabina , Nero's second wife . It had rich gardens with oleander , laurel and lemon trees . In addition, the villa of Lucius Crassius Tertius was uncovered , into which 74 people fled during the volcanic eruption, whose bodies were found here.

Presumably Oplontis was a villa settlement of wealthy Romans on the coastal road from Neapolis (Naples) to Surrentum .
