Josef Rebell (born January 11, 1787 in Vienna , † December 18, 1828 in Dresden ) was an Austrian landscape painter .
Life
Rebell studied at the Vienna Academy from 1799 to 1809 . At first he was trained as a draftsman with the architect Louis Montoyer , but soon he studied with Friedrich August Brand and was a pupil of Michael Wutky , whereby he turned to landscape painting. From 1809-10 Rebell stayed in Switzerland , then until 1812 in Milan and from 1813 to 1815 in Naples , where he worked for Caroline Bonaparte , wife of Joachim Murat , the then King of Naples . 1816-1824 he then stayed in Rome . Emperor Franz I appointed Rebell to Vienna in 1824 as director of the imperial picture gallery and palace captain at Belvedere Palace . In the same year he also became professor and head of the landscape class at the Vienna Academy. While still relatively young, he unexpectedly died of an illness during a trip to Dresden.
power
Josef Rebell was heavily influenced by English and French painting ( Claude Lorrain ) and by Joseph Anton Koch , making him one of the first realists in landscape painting in German-speaking countries. He is one of the most important Austrian landscape painters of the 19th century. Together with Franz Steinfeld , he is considered to be the founder of realistic landscapes in Austria.
