Zeebrugge ( French Zeebruges , German  Zeebrugge ) is a locality in the district of Lissewege of the city of Bruges on the North Sea , Belgium , West Flanders Province . Zeebrugge has 4,301 inhabitants (2014).

history

Zeebrugge emerged from a fishing village on the North Sea. In 1134 a storm surge tore a fairway into the Zwin bay , so that the city of Bruges, which is about 15 kilometers inland, then had direct access to the North Sea . However, the Zwin approach silted up from the 15th century and could not be restored even with hydraulic engineering measures.

Around 1870 Bruges was again completely enclosed by land masses. The emerging industry in the city increasingly demanded a restoration of the formerly existing direct connection to the North Sea in order to be able to handle trade with England more effectively. The expansion of the new Zeebrugge overseas port began in 1892 . The first port complex was inaugurated in 1907 by the Belgian King Leopold II .

Wreckage of British cruisers after the attack on Zeebrugge, April 1918

During the First World War , Zeebrugge was occupied by the German Reich and used as a submarine and seaplane base. That is why the British planned an advance towards Zeebrugge during the Third Battle of Flanders in 1917 , but this failed. On April 23, 1918, the undertook Royal Navy with the raid on Zeebrugge and Ostend an unsuccessful attack on the naval base that brought them huge losses on the contrary. The British still celebrated the action as a success because their sunk landing craft temporarily blocked the port exit. In October 1918, Zeebrugge was again fiercely contested.

Zeebrugge gained public attention when the Ro-Ro ferry Herald of Free Enterprise capsized on March 6, 1987, killing 193 people.
