After six more years, it sank on July 12, 2001 on the way to being scrapped off the coast of South Africa .

history

The Gripsholm was built at Ansaldo in Genoa under construction number 1500 and launched on April 8, 1956. After the takeover on April 2, 1957, the ship was put into service on May 14 for the liner service from Gothenburg to New York .

The Gripsholm around 1970 at the North Cape

In August 1975 the Gripsholm undertook a few cruises before it was launched on September 19 in the Esefjord, which is part of the Fjærlandsfjord . In November 1975, the ship went to the Greek shipowner Michael A. Karageorgis, who renamed it Navarino and transferred it to Greece in December. On May 22, 1976, the Navarino began her first Mediterranean cruise from Venice for Karageorgis Lines .

On August 8, 1981, the Navarino ran aground off Patmos . Although she was only slightly damaged, Karageorgis sold the ship on October 24th to Sally Shipping, who chartered it to the Commodore Cruise Line . Just five days later, a fire broke out in one of the cabins, causing additional damage. The Navarino was taken to the Hellenic Shipyard in Skaramanga for repairs. The damage turned out to be too great, which is why the ship was launched in Piraeus .

In May 1983 the Navarino went to Multiship Italia SrL, based in Rome , which they renamed Samantha . The ship was transferred from Piraeus to La Spezia , but continued to lay up there. In October 1984 the Samantha was finally brought to Perama and renovated there, in order to be put into service as Regent Sea for Regency Cruises from November 1985 . From then on, the ship was used for cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska .

As Regent Sea in San Diego, 1995

On November 2, 1995, the Regent Sea was arrested in Nassau after Regency Cruises filed for bankruptcy. The ship lying under the name Sea in Tampa from November 1997 changed hands several times in the following years, but never returned to service. A planned use as a hotel ship in Sweden also remained unrealized. In May 2001 the Sea was finally sold to India for scrapping, but never arrived there. On July 12, 2001, the ship leaked in rough seas off the coast of South Africa and sank shortly afterwards.
