Svenska America Lines
The Svenska Amerika Linien (SAL) ( German Swedish America Line ) was a shipping company based in Gothenburg . It was founded in December 1914 as Rederiaktiebolaget Sverige-North America and began shipping liner services between Gothenburg and New York City in 1915 . In 1925 she changed her name to Svenska America Lines .
history
With the Gripsholm , SAL used one of the first transatlantic liners with a diesel engine drive from 1925 . Three years later, the sister ship Kungsholm was put into service. After the Second World War , the liner service was resumed in 1946. In the same year SAL merged with Svenska America Mexico Lines (SAML) and took over their cargo ships . Due to the increasing transatlantic air traffic , SAL ceased its passenger traffic in 1975 and the last container ship was sold in 1986 .
