Anna Maria lies on a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico . The city borders directly on Holmes Beach in the south and is around 10 km west of Bradenton and around 80 km south of Tampa .

history

According to the city administration, Anna Maria was the first place on the island where the first colonists built their houses. The first settler on the island is said to have been "George Emerson Bean" from Connecticut . He built his house in 1893 on what is now the Rod and Reel Pier and settled on a total of 140 acres. His son, George W. Bean, founded the Anna Maria Beach Company with John Roser. Streets and sidewalks were laid out; Houses, shops and the first drinking water supply were built. In 1911, before there was a bridge to the mainland, a pier was built at "Zampa Bay", which was used for supplies and boat trips.

In 1913, John Roser built the first church on Anna Maria Island. The illuminated cross on the steeple of the Roser Gedächtnisgemeinschaftskirche was a beacon for fishermen. Captain Mitch Davis, Anna Maria's first mayor, was elected in 1925. After that, the island was also supplied with electricity. The first school was built in 1930 on the site where the community center is today. In 1921 the bridge (Cortez Bridge) to the mainland was built. Thus it was also possible to supply the residents by means of horse and carts. It was not until 1957 that the fragile wooden bridge was replaced by a modern, stable construction.
