The Union Station is a train station in long-distance traffic and is used by Amtrak operated. It is designed as a terminus and is located in Tampa in Hillsborough County in Florida .
history
The station was opened on May 15, 1912 with the aim of creating a central transfer point for the railroad companies Atlantic Coast Line Railroad , Seaboard Air Line Railroad and Tampa Northern Railroad . As a Union Railroad Station , it was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. After the station building increasingly fell into disrepair, it was closed in 1984 and only reopened in 1998 after being restored. In the same year, CSX donated the building to the city of Tampa, which has since rented its premises to various companies as offices. In 2008, the Friends of Tampa Union Station was established to maintain the building .
Originally the station was built with eight tracks, of which only six are left. Only one of them (track 2 / track 2 ) is in regular use today.
In recent years, the station has been part of plans for a high-speed route from Tampa via Lakeland and Orlando to Miami. The plans were put on hold by Governor Rick Scott in March 2011.
Connection
The station is operated by the Amtrak rail company and is centrally located in downtown Tampa. Surrounding streets are the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway (SR 618), North Nebraska Avenue ( SR 45 ) and the Nuccio Parkway . The station address is 601 North Nebraska Avenue .
From here the Silver Star travels south to Miami and north to New York City.
There are long-distance bus routes from Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach to Orlando , Lakeland , Pinellas Park - St. Petersburg , Bradenton , Sarasota , Port Charlotte and Fort Myers .
