Port Charlotte is a census-designated place (CDP) in Charlotte County in the US state of Florida with 54,392 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Port Charlotte is located on the north bank of the Peace River and around 5 km northwest of Punta Gorda . The CDP is crossed by the Tamiami Trail ( US 41 ) and affected by Florida State Road 776 . To the east, Interstate 75 passes Port Charlotte. Tampa is about 140 km north of town.

With the remote bus system Thruway Motorcoach from the Amtrak railway company, there is a connection between the town and Tampa . At Union Station there , you can get a connection to the Silver Star and Silver Meteor trains .

Religions

In Port Charlotte there are currently 70 different churches from 30 different denominations. Among the churches belonging to a denomination, the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 13 churches. There are also 6 churches that do not belong to any denomination (status: 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 54,392 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 29,408 households. The population density was 941 inhabitants / km². 84.8% of the population identified themselves as whites, 9.3% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 1.6% as Asian Americans . 1.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.3% to several ethnic groups. 8.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 44.2% of all households lived in 22.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 63.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.27 people and the average family size was 2.76 people.

19.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 17.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 34.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 50 years. 47.9% of the population were male and 52.1% were female.

The median annual income was $ 40,614, with 14.0% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 90.77% of the population, 4.41% spoke Spanish and 4.82% had another mother tongue.
