The Lakeland station is a railway station in long-distance traffic and is used by Amtrak operated. It is located in Lakeland in Polk County , Florida .

history

Lakeland's first station building was built from wood by the South Florida Railroad from 1884 to 1886 and burned down in 1901. The building, which was rebuilt in the following year, soon proved to be too small and was therefore replaced by a larger stone building by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1910. This building also suffered fire damage in November 1918 and was reopened in January 1919 after restoration.

The station building, which opened in 1960, became their property after the merger of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad with the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1967. It was only demolished in 2008, ten years after completion of the current station building just under two kilometers to the west. The platforms of the previous station can still be seen. The champion , a former competitor of the Silver Star on the route from New York City to Miami , stayed here until 1979 .

In recent years, the station has been part of plans for a high-speed route from Tampa via Lakeland and Orlando to Miami. The plans were discontinued by Governor Rick Scott in March 2011, however.

Connection

The station is operated by the Amtrak railway company and is centrally located in the center of Lakeland. From here the Silver Star makes a detour to Tampa and back again, before continuing its journey either to New York or Miami. Depending on where a trip is booked to, either the station code LAK (north) or LKL (south) is used. Lakeland train station is the only one in the United States with two station codes.

The long-distance bus company Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach also offers direct connections to Orlando , Tampa , Pinellas Park , Bradenton , Sarasota , Port Charlotte and Fort Myers as well as to Dade City , Wildwood , The Villages , Ocala , Gainesville , Waldo and Jacksonville .

The Citrus Connection bus company ensures local transport within Lakeland as well as to Auburndale , Winter Haven and Bartow .
