Dade City is a city and also the county seat of Pasco County in the US state of Florida with 6437 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Dade City is about 50 km north of Tampa .

history

In 1886, the Tropical Florida Railroad , a subsidiary of the Florida Railroad , opened a railway line from Ocala via Dade City to Plant City . The railway line was extended to Tampa in 1890 . Also in the 1880s, the route of the Inverness and Brooksville Railway from Dade City to Citrus Springs was opened. This route was closed in 1987 and later converted into the Withlacoochee State Trail .

The Dade City station was from 1994 to 1995 and from 1996 to 2004 a station of the Amtrak's Palmetto from New York City to Tampa . Today, the section between Jacksonville and Lakeland is served by the Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach long-distance buses .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 6,437 inhabitants were distributed over 2,868 households. The population density was 757.3 inh / km². 67.3% of the population identified themselves as whites , 20.4% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 8.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 20.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 32.0% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 30.5% of all households. 61.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.47 people and the average family size was 3.17 people.

27.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 45.5% of the population were male and 54.5% were female.

The median annual income was $ 28,510, with 33.1% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 87.73% of the population, 11.74% spoke Spanish and 0.53% spoke Italian .

Dade City is crossed by US Highways 98 and 301 and Florida State Road 52 . The nearest airport is Tampa International Airport (around 70 km southwest). The Dade City train station is closed.

The crime rate in 2010 was 376 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were three rapes, eight robberies, 40 assaults, 109 break-ins, 183 thefts, eight car thefts and two arson attacks.
