Lacoochee is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pasco County in the US state of Florida with 1714 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
The Withlacoochee River flows through the village . Lacoochee is approximately 10 km north of Dade City and approximately 60 km north of Tampa . US Highways 98 and 301 ( SR 35 ) and Florida State Road 575 cross or touch the CDP .
history
In 1886, the Tropical Florida Railroad , a subsidiary of the Florida Railroad , opened a railway line from Ocala via Lacoochee to Plant City . The railway line was extended to Tampa in 1890 . This is where the Orange Belt Railway, completed in 1888, crossed from Sanford to Saint Petersburg . After several takeovers, the line was shut down when the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was founded in 1967.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 1714 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 537 households. The population density was 231.6 inh / km². 67.9% of the population identified themselves as white, 19.4% as African-American , 1.1% as Native American and 0.1% as Asian Americans . 8.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 39.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 22.8% of all households lived in 52.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 77.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 3.23 people and the average family size was 3.64 people.
40.1% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 25.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 20.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 13.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 28 years. 49.2% of the population were male and 50.8% were female.
The median annual income was $ 22,083, with 45.7% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 73.74% of the population and Spanish was spoken by 26.26%.
