Kurt Zielenziger

Kurt Zielenziger (born February 21, 1890 in Potsdam ; died July 19, 1944 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp ) was a German economic historian and journalist .

Life

Zielenziger came from a wealthy merchant family in Potsdam. His grandfather founded a grain wholesaler in Potsdam in 1848 and was on the board of the Potsdam synagogue community from 1851 to 1886. His father, Julius Zielenziger (1856–1938), had also held this office since 1897 and was chairman of the Jewish community in Potsdam from 1934 to 1938.

After graduating from high school in 1908, Zielenziger studied social sciences at the universities of Munich , Berlin and Freiburg and was born in 1912 with the text Die alten Deutschen Kameralisten. A contribution to the history of economics and the problem of mercantilism to the Dr. rer. pole. PhD. He then worked in the private sector, but continued to do so. a. scientifically active for the Encyclopaedia Judaica as well as with his bio-bibliographical study on Gerhart von Schulze-Gaevernitz , published in 1926, and his economic history work, Jews in the German economy , published in 1930 . Zielenziger became the business editor of the Vossische Zeitung in 1926 and deputy head of the news office of the city of Berlin in 1929.

After the National Socialist seizure of power in 1933, Zielenziger left Germany with his wife Lilli (1892–1945) and his son Wolfgang (born 1920) and fled to Amsterdam . There he founded the Jewish Central Information Office with Alfred Wiener . In 1939 the family was expatriated from the German Reich . Two years after the invasion of the Netherlands by the German Wehrmacht , Zielenziger was arrested on September 29, 1943 and initially interned in Westerbork transit camp , and from February 1, 1944 in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. He was murdered there on July 19, 1944.
