history

New College was founded in 1960 as a private college for gifted students. The college opened its doors to 101 students in 1964. The history philosopher Arnold J. Toynbee was brought out of retirement as a lecturer . By 1972 the college had over 500 students.

By 1975, however, the college had amassed $ 3.9 million in debt and was on the verge of bankruptcy. The University of South Florida was interested in purchasing the land and facilities to start a new campus. In an unusual arrangement, the Supervisory Committee agreed to transfer the campus and assets to the state. In return, this took over the debt and continued to operate the college as an independent unit within the University of South Florida. The USF then opened a branch in Sarasota that used the same campus. This began a difficult relationship between the New College and the USF that would last for 27 years until the USF opened a separate campus for the USF Sarasota Manatee on August 28, 2006 .
