biography

Dazzy Vance was a prime example of how much you can still achieve in baseball, even when you are older. Up to the age of 31, the pitcher was mainly employed in the minor leagues , with brief exceptions in the Pittsburgh Pirates and the New York Yankees in 1915 and 1918. In the 1920s, Vance was the standout strikeoutpitcher in the National League for the Brooklyn Dodgers, a team that seldom competed for the championship. He had his outstanding season in 1924 with 28 wins, 262 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.16. He led these three statistics and won the Triple Crown in pitching. Through these performances he won the title of MVP in the National League before Rogers Hornsby . On September 13, 1925, he throws a no-hitter against the Philadelphia Phillies . A title in the World Series was Vance at the age of 43 years with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1934 , but he threw there only 1 1/3 innings. After returning to the Brooklyn Dodgers, he retired after the 1935 season.

In 1955, Dazzy Vance was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame .
