Burleigh Grimes played his first game in the major league on September 10, 1916 for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher. When spitball was banned in 1920 , Grimes was one of the last 17 pitchers allowed to practice the throw. At the end of his career in 1934, he was the last person who still had this permit.

In the 1920s, Grimes showed his best performances, twice he led the National League with the most wins, five times he had more than 20 victories at the end of the season. With the Brooklyn Dodgers he reached the World Series in 1920 , but lost with his team to the Cleveland Indians in seven games. From 1930 to 1932 the teams of Grimes also reached the finals, two defeats and one win were the result. In 1930 the Cardinals lost to the Philadelphia Athletics in seven games, Grimes lost both of his starts. In 1931, the same pairing of finals ended with the victory of St. Louis, Grimes won two games in that series. Despite this good result, he was transferred to the Chicago Cubs , with whom he also reached the World Series, but there was defeated by the New York Yankees . At the age of 40, he ended his playing career in 1934.

In 1937 he took over the managerial post of the Brooklyn Dodgers from Casey Stengel , but could only achieve a sixth and seventh place in his two seasons. Further managerial jobs in the minor leagues followed in his further career.

Grimes got his nickname Ol 'Stubblebeard because he never shaved before games where he was the starting pitcher.

In 1964 the Veterans Committee elected him to the Baseball Hall of Fame . Grimes died of complications from cancer in 1985 at the age of 92.
