biography

Walter Alston played most of his playing career in the minor leagues . He played his only game in the National League on September 27, 1936 for the St. Louis Cardinals . In this game he was used as a substitute for Johnny Mize , as this had been sent off. As a player, he took over the post of manager in Portsmouth in the Mid-Atlantic League in 1940. In 1944 he came to the Brooklyn Dodgers organization as a minor league manager , where he was to be active for 33 years. On November 24, 1953, Walter O'Malley appointed him manager of the Dodgers. Alston replaced Charlie Dressen , who had called for a multi-year contract, which was then considered taboo by the Dodgers. Alston worked on 24 one-year contracts until 1976. Directed by Alston, the Brooklyn Dodgers achieved their only World Series victory in 1955 . The following year he won the National League title with his team. After the Dodgers' move to Los Angeles , he then worked with players such as Sandy Koufax , Don Drysdale and Maurey Wills , with whom he reached four championships in the National League from 1959 to 1966. Further victories in the World Series followed in 1963 and 1965. Walter Alston's last big team was made up of players like Steve Garvey , Dave Lopes and Ron Cey . With them Alston reached his last World Series in 1974, in which the Dodgers were defeated by the Oakland Athletics in five games.

His last game as a manager was on September 27, 1976 a 0-1 loss to the Houston Astros . As of June 5, 1977, the Dodgers no longer assign Alstons number 24. Alston ended his career with 2,048 wins in 23 years with the Dodgers. In 1983 he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee as the first manager of the 1970s . Alston passed away a year later at the age of 72.
