Matthew Brennan "Matt" Cassel (* 17th May 1982 in Northridge , California ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . Most recently he was under contract with the Detroit Lions .

According to ESPN , he's the only quarterback to have played a game from the start in the NFL that hasn't been a single game starter on the field in college.

Early years

In 1994, Cassel reached the finals of the Little League World Series with the baseball team from his town . He played in the position of first baseman .

In high school, Cassel played football as well as baseball. In his senior year, he was featured in Tom Lemming 's Top 100 as the eighth best quarterback and 53rd overall best player in the country. Lemming described Cassel as a pocket passer with a very strong and precise throw.

Even before Cassel went into his senior year of high school, he decided to play college football for the University of Southern California (USC) and their football team, the USC Trojans .

college

In college he only played as a substitute for Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart , who both won the Heisman Trophy . After Palmer left college for the NFL in 2002, Cassel lost the duel for the position of starting quarterback to his own substitute Leinart. Subsequently, Cassel was used as a tight end and wide receiver . He also played in the special teams and started a game on the position of halfback . In four seasons, Cassel threw 33 passes, 19 of which were successful for 192 yards . He didn't throw a touchdown and an interception .

His college roommates were future NFL players Carson Palmer and Troy Polamalu .

In 2004, Cassel played baseball again. In the 2004 MLB Draft of Major League Baseball (MLB), he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in 34th place.

Professional career

Although Cassel had little chance to prove himself in college, he was on the list of many NFL teams after workouts. A former college coach wanted to sign him as a free agent after the 2005 NFL Draft and was surprised that the New England Patriots selected Cassel in the seventh round in 230 place. They preferred him to better known quarterbacks such as Jason White , who won the 2003 Heisman Trophy.

2005

At the beginning of the 2005 season , Cassel was the second substitute in the Patriots for Tom Brady behind Doug Flutie . He had previously prevailed against Chris Redman and Rohan Davey . He made his first game in the final minutes of a 17:41 loss to the San Diego Chargers . Two of his four passes were successful for 15 yards. He also threw an interception.

In the last game of the 2005 season against the Miami Dolphins , Cassel was allowed to play from the second quarter. The Patriots lost 26:28. Cassel was sacked for a safety , but also threw two touchdown passes.

2006

After Flutie resigned after last season, Cassel inherited the position of substitute for the Patriots without a fight. Cassel was on the team in every game of the 2006 season . He also prevailed against Vinny Testaverde, who was only signed during the season .

In the 16th week of the season, Cassel became the ball holder on field goals . He also threw a late touchdown against the Tennessee Titans in week 17 .

2007

In week 7 of the 2007 season , Cassel threw an interception against the Miami Dolphins that resulted in a touchdown. A week later he was substituted on for the Washington Redskins , as the Patriots were already leading 45-0. The game ended 52-7. Cassel himself ran the final touchdown for 15 yards by jumping over two defenders into the end zone . It was the longest touchdown run by a Patriots quarterback in two decades.

2008

In the first game of the 2008 season against the Kansas City Chiefs , Tom Brady was injured . Substitute Cassel threw 13 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. The Patriots won by 17:10. A day later, the Patriots announced that Tom Brady would be out for the entire season and that Matt Cassel would be the team's quarterback from now on.

On September 14th he played against the New York Jets for the first time from the start. 16 of his 23 passes were successful for 165 yards. It was the first time a quarterback, in his first game from the start, could defeat a team in which Brett Favre was the opposing quarterback.

In the 7th week Cassel was the AFC Offensive Player of the Week ( Offensive Player of the Week for the AFC determined). He threw 183 yards for three touchdowns against the Denver Broncos , in a 41-7 win.

In week 10, he ran his second career touchdown against the Buffalo Bills for 13 yards. The Patriots won the game 20:10. The Patriots held the ball for a total of 37 minutes. The last drive alone lasted over nine minutes, in which the Patriots played the ball 19 times. In doing so, they equalized the old record.

On September 13, the Patriots lost 31:34 against the New York Jets . In the meantime, Cassel had taken the lead with three successive attempts with 24: 6. In the end, 30 of his 51 passes were successful for 400 yards and three touchdowns. This gave him a quarterback rating of 103.4. In addition, Cassel ran for 62 yards himself. He became the first Patriots player to throw 300 yards and run 50 in the same game. He is also the first player in NFL history to throw more than 400 yards and run more than 60 yards at the same time.

A week later, in Week 12, Cassel led the Patriots to a 48:28 win over the Miami Dolphins. He threw 30 of 43 passes for 415 yards. He also threw three touchdowns to Randy Moss and achieved a rating of 114.0. In addition, he ran an eight-yard touchdown. This makes Cassel only the fifth quarterback who threw more than 400 yards in two consecutive games. Thanks to this achievement, he was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

In the 15th week against the Oakland Raiders , Cassel set a personal record with four touchdown passes, despite the fact that his father had died six days earlier. The Patriots won 49:26.

The Patriots' last home game of the season, against the Arizona Cardinals , faced difficult conditions with ice and sleet. Thanks to Cassel, the Patriots clearly won with 47: 7. Cassel, who played in snow for the first time, threw 20 passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns. Despite the difficult conditions, he did not throw an interception. When the Patriots were 44-0 up, the Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner was replaced by Cassel's old teammate Matt Leinart . This threw a touchdown and an interception.

The Patriots won the last game of the season 17-0 against the Buffalo Bills . This won the Patriots their fourth game in a row. During the game there was a very strong wind, so that Cassel only threw eight times and successfully completed six of them. He didn't throw a touchdown, but also no interception. In addition, he kicked a punt in a third down , which already appeared at the 20-yard line, but rolled to the 1-yard line due to a strong tailwind, so that Cassel was officially awarded a 57-yard punt. Despite eleven wins, the Patriots did not make it into the play-offs , which has not happened to any team with such a good record since 1985.

Franchise day

After the end of the season, Cassel's contract ran out. Due to his strong performance and Brady's still uncertain return, the Patriots used their franchise day to hold Cassel. On February 5, 2009, the Patriots made him an official offer, which Cassel accepted two days later. This was the highest endowed one-year contract in NFL history at over 14 million US dollars .

Kansas City Chiefs

On February 28, 2009, Cassel and his teammate Mike Vrabel were swapped for the 34th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft for the Kansas City Chiefs . On July 14, 2009, Cassel signed a six-year contract for $ 63 million. The Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers proposed a trade with the Denver Broncos . This would have meant that either team would have received the Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler . Matt Cassel would have moved to Denver and the Patriots would have received the first round rights in the 2009 NFL Draft of the team to which Jay Cutler would have moved.

In Kansas City he fought with Tyler Thigpen for the position of quarterback. Cassel prevailed and Thigpen was traded to the Miami Dolphins . Since his number 16 was not available in Kansas City, he decided on number seven, as a team usually scores seven points on a touchdown.

In the first game of the preseason against the Seattle Seahawks Cassel injured his knee, but played all but the last game of the preseason. Even the first game of the regular season against the Baltimore Ravens Cassel could not play. The remaining games of the season Cassel played all from the start, the Chiefs scored with him as quarterback but only four wins out of eleven losses.

Minnesota Vikings

The Kansas City Chiefs fired Cassel on March 13, 2013. On the same day, the Minnesota Vikings signed the quarterback for two years. The Vikings paid him in those years a salary of 10.5 million US dollars .

Buffalo Bills

The Vikings exchanged on March 10, 2015 Cassel and a pick of the sixth round of the 2015 draft to the Buffalo Bills against their pick of the 5th round in 2015 and the 7th round in 2016. He played the entire preseason with the Bills, but could not prevail against his opponent Tyrod Taylor and was declared number 2 of the team.

Dallas Cowboys

On September 22, 2015, Cassel and the pick of the seventh round in the 2017 draft of the Buffalo Bills were swapped for the Cowboys. In return, the Bills received the fifth round pick of the 2017 Cowboys Draft. Dallas was responding to an injury to their quarterback Tony Romo .

Tennessee Titans

On March 10, 2016, Cassel was signed by the Tennessee Titans , who already had three quarterbacks under contract with Marcus Mariota , Zach Mettenberger and Alex Tanney . He was released on March 9, 2018.

Detroit Lions

In April 2018, he signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Lions.

Private

In February 2007, Cassel married his girlfriend, Lauren Killian, who played volleyball in his college. His best man was his old college roommate, Carson Palmer .

Cassel has three siblings. His eldest brother Jack married Cassel's wife's girlfriend and played for the Cleveland Indians as a pitcher . His younger brother Justin also plays the position of pitcher, but for the Chicago White Sox's farm team , the Birmingham Barons .
