Career highlights and awards

Michael Alan Sam, Jr (born January 7, 1990 in Houston , Texas ) is an American Canadian football and American football player for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He acts on the position of the defensive end . He played college football from 2009 to 2013 for the Missouri Tigers , the University of Missouri . There he was in 2013 for All-American and Southeastern Conference Defensive (Player of the Year the Year defender ) selected.

college

With his team he won twelve games in the 2013 season with only two defeats. On January 3, 2014, his last game for the Tigers was followed by a 41:31 win in the Cotton Bowl against the Oklahoma State University Cowboys . Oklahoma was just three points behind with a minute to go and was only 27 yards from the Tigers' end zone (a field goal would have equalized) when Michael Sam forced a fumble on a sack that was 73 yards from his teammate Shane Ray was carried back to the victory-securing touchdown .

Because of his success, he took part in the January 2014 Senior Bowl , an all-star game with candidates for a professional career. He was classified as too small and weak for his usual position as defensive end and used as an outside linebacker , where he could not convince. A similar change was attempted with Björn Werner , who was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round after success as DE at college , but could not prevail there as OLB.

Professional career

On February 10, 2014, he declared he was gay , which caused a lot of media coverage.

Sam took part in the NFL Scouting Combine show training in February 2014 , where his results were rated as disappointing, too small for DE and too slow for OLB. After another public training session, he was ranked 12th to 25th under Defensive Ends.

Sam participated in the 2014 NFL Draft . Due to his outing and his performances, he was only predicted a late election, in one of the last rounds, although he was originally rated as a third round pick. Ultimately, the St. Louis Rams voted him in 249th place and thus in the seventh round. Thus Sam became the first publicly gay, active professional in the National Football League (NFL), for which he was congratulated by US President Barack Obama .

Sam played in all four preparation games, scored 11 tackles and 3 sacks, including against QB Johnny Manziel , but was dismissed when the squad was reduced to the permitted 53 players. The Rams preferred to keep the versatile, larger, heavier and 40 yards 0.2 seconds faster undrafted Ethan Westbrooks as the ninth defensive lineman instead of Sam, who only acted in the position of the left DE.

On September 3, 2014, the Dallas Cowboys signed him into their Practice Squad , from which they released him on October 21, 2014.

At the beginning of 2015, the NFL Veteran Combine show training was held for players who were already NFL experienced without a contract, where Sam was a tenth slower in the 40-yard sprint with 4.99 seconds than last year.

Sam moved to Canada for the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes in May 2015 and made his professional debut in August. He soon left the Alouettes and took some time off because, according to his own statements, he was “emotionally barely able” to play football at the highest level and was reluctant to go to Canada.
