Big play
In American football, big play is a special move or a special game situation. The term is used inconsistently depending on the definition.
On the one hand, a move is counted as a big play if the attacking team ( offense ) gains a relatively large amount of space through it. Where, according to some sources, more than 10 yards must be reached by a running play or more than 16 yards by a passing play , others require a length of 20 or more yards for passes. Still other sources assume a pass length of over 25 yards. Elsewhere, distances of 20 yards are assumed for both running and passing plays in order to be able to speak of a big play .
Apart from the aspect of gaining space, there are also explanations that describe a big play more generally as a move that leads to game changes or even a game decision. Other explanations understand big plays as special game situations such as B. a change in the right of attack ( turnover ) by intercepting the football ( interception ) or dropping the football by the player carrying the ball ( fumble ) or a tackle by the opposing quarterback ( sack ).
Some former football players, on the other hand, define big plays as moves with special touchdown potential. Other sources assume the existence of such a touchdown as a condition for a big play .
Examples of big plays
- Interception by Malcolm Butler in Super Bowl XLIX
- Hail Mary Pass by Aaron Rodgers at the Miracle in Motown .
