Good Boys is an American comedy film with elements of a road movie and coming-of-age film by director Gene Stupnitsky . The leading roles are Jacob Tremblay , Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon . The film was released in German cinemas on August 22, 2019.

The three friends Max, Lucas and Thor, who together call themselves the " Bean Bag Boys", are in their first year of junior high school . To be considered cool and grown up, the three of them go to a skate park in the afternoon, where Max and Thor come into contact with Atticus, who tries to persuade them to sip a beer. While Max can meet the challenge, but Thor backs down and is now on Atticus and his friends with " feeding cup teased", and he also gives up his hobby, singing. At the same time, Lucas' parents reveal to their son that they are going to get a divorce. The next day, Max von Soren, who for him is the coolest boy in the entire school, is invited to a party where girls also have to be kissed. After Max was able to convince Soren to invite his friends Thor and Lucas too, the three of them want to learn to kiss, also because Max is secretly in love with Brixlee, who is also present at the party.
Your attempts to learn this through porn or with the help of a sex doll fail. Therefore, the group decides to borrow the drone from Max's father, who is on a business trip and has expressly forbidden the use of the missile, and thus to spy on the nymphomaniac neighbor. But Hannah and her friend Lily manage to secure the drone, whereupon the three boys steal a bag with the "sex drug" Molly from the women . At an agreed exchange meeting, the friends realize that they are in possession of drugs and want to hand them over to the authorities and at the same time recommend that the "addicts" should be withdrawn. Max manages to control the drone with his cell phone without being noticed and thus snatch it from the two women, but steers them directly in front of a bus, which destroys the missile. So that Max doesn't get into trouble from his father, the three of them decide to buy a new drone in a shopping center. To get the money they need, they sell Claude, whom they initially consider a pedophile , which is why they arm themselves with sex toys , the sex doll owned by Thor's parents. They then give the drugs to Officer Sacks in a shop, but when they think the policeman is about to arrest them, they flee and lock the door with a dildo . Shortly thereafter, they meet again Hannah and Lily, who still want their drugs, and deliver a chase with them, which finally ends with a dislocated shoulder from Lucas. After Max and Thor could ball their shoulder again and then ran on a highway , they reach the mall. There they have to find out, however, that Hannah and Lily bought the last drone and want to trade it for the drugs. However, since Max, Thor and Lucas handed them over to the police, the two women demand that the boys get new drugs from Hannah's ex-boyfriend Benji. Reluctantly, the students follow and actually get a new "Molly" from Benji, but have to switch him and his friends off with a paintball marker .
Afterwards they get the new drone from Hannah and Lily, but they now have to find out that Max's father is returning from his business trip earlier. Therefore Max steers the drone to his home, but not without destroying the entire interior, for which he is under house arrest for a month. The friends part ways temporarily, as each blames the other for their misconduct. Nevertheless, everyone turns up at Soren's party, where Max and Brixlee finally kiss, whereupon the two of them temporarily meet. Thor, meanwhile, can ditch his nickname "Sippy Cup" by taking four long sips of a beer stolen from the store, and is later encouraged by Lily, who turns out to be Soren's sister, and Hannah to nurture his singing talent. Shortly afterwards he was given the leading role in a musical at his school, which is why a celebration was organized in his honor. There Max introduces his new girlfriend Scout to his friends, as Brixlee is now with Max's girlfriend Taylor. Lucas, meanwhile, became the mediator at his school. All three friends realize that from now on they will go different ways, but will still remain friends.

In August 2017, it was reported that Seth Rogen and his production company Point Gray Pictures would collaborate with Good Universe on the R-rated comedy film Good Boys , which Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg would co-script and direct. At the same time, a first synopsis was given, according to which the film was about four 12-year-old teenagers who were caught between “childish innocence” and “lewd depravity” and had to replace a broken drone before their parents came home. In March 2018 Jacob Tremblay signed for one of the three main roles. While Keith L. Williams was hired for the role of Lucas , Brady Noon was able to prevail in a casting for the role of Thor against around 300 competitors.
Filming took place in July and August 2018 in Vancouver , the home of Jacob Tremblay. For this reason, the production team was given the opportunity to shoot at Tremblay's real school and to accommodate Williams and Noon with their fellow actors for a few nights, also to make the friendship shown on screen even more realistic. In early August 2018, there was a media scandal during the filming when the accusation of blackfacing was in the room after a photo of a dark-skinned actor who served as a double for Keith L. Williams was published. Subsequently, producer Seth Rogen apologized for the incidents.
A first trailer was released on March 11, 2019, a second was released on July 17, 2019. The world premiere took place on March 11, 2019 as part of the South by Southwest film festival . The US theatrical release was on August 16, 2019, in Germany the film was released a week later on August 22.
The film was released digitally in the United States on October 29 and on DVD and Blu-ray on November 12, 2019 . In Germany, the film has been available digitally since December 24, 2019 and on analog data carriers since January 9, 2020.

Age rating
In the United States, the film received an R rating from the MPAA . In Germany, the film received a “release from the age of 12” from the FSK . The reasoning states that the film focuses on friendly, clumsy characters and deals with topics such as sexuality, bullying, drug and alcohol consumption, but also respect, friendship and family conflicts. In some places, this leads to coarse humor and sexual vulgarisms, but there are no scenes that could affect children and adolescents from the age of 12 or disorient them socially and ethically.

Good Boys was able to convince 80% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 60 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .
Eric Vespe from Collider describes the "slippery comedy" as a heartfelt film about friendship, which is largely a success. He radiates positivity throughout the length of the run, the jokes based on the innocence of the main characters are funny and the “fuck” exclamations are brought into harmony with the heart. The film is surprisingly emotional, of course paired with rough sayings, and could be a breakthrough for “pre-sex comedies”. The three main actors harmonize perfectly with each other and have good dynamics, although all three characters would have very different traits. Above all Jacob Tremblay proves that he can also present very good acting performances in “stupid comedies”, but Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon are also very funny and would use their full potential. Vespe mentions the only point of criticism that there are many inappropriate cuts in the first third of the film, which would artificially increase the narrative speed.
For Dennis Harvey from Variety , on the other hand, the mediocre comedy disappoints if you don't like 12-year-olds who would crack rough slogans, but are otherwise pretty ignorant. The film shows in the first scene in which direction he wants to go. So be Goodboys much too big and predictable and have a really tasteless humor, would simply not ignite in which even jokes that are not sexually. Only a few parents would make for funny moments, but for the most part the film tries to force the audience to find the ignorance of the main characters amusing. On the positive side, Harvey points out that Good Boys are lively, clever, fast-paced and energetic. For him, too, the film is too similar to Seth Rogen 's earlier work Superbad , it only has swear words and drug references. Another point of criticism is that there are no statements about children, only what 30-year-olds would think of them. In conclusion, Harvey draws that Good Boys is a mainstream film comedy with age-independent music that lacks heart and humor.
Manohla Dargis of the New York Times is similarly critical of the film. According to her, not all of the jokes in the film would ignite, which is typical of Seth Rogen productions that consist of both raunchiness and sentimentality. The film exploited the fact that the main characters are children and also have a human weakness. The exploitation and good faith of them is amusing in some scenes, but all too often the jokes are based on the pain or stupidity of others as well as different ethnic views, whereby one laughs not with, but at the main characters and in a certain way "bullies" the filmmakers would be. Jacob Tremblay's character is overshadowed by almost all other characters because she is not yet ready to deal with growing up. There are also numerous superfluous scenes and useless adults, with women in particular being portrayed in a very clichéd manner. In conclusion, Dargis draws that the film recognizes its meanness and therefore does not sink into sentimental topics such as friendship or family, but instead offers sometimes really good slapstick interludes. It is a pity that the film is only intended to entertain and not to stimulate thought, since the good acting performances of the main actors have shown what would have been possible.
For Oliver Kube von Filmstarts, however , the gags of the fast-paced and turbulent film would ignite with a high hit rate. There are some excellently functioning scenes with a hearty, but by no means stupid slapstick humor. The naivete of the main characters also creates wonderfully funny moments, especially when they confront older people with them. The dynamic script has a genre-typical course, in which the protagonists learn from their mistakes and ultimately develop further. Nevertheless, Good Boys stands out from other coming-of-age films in that you don't necessarily see the adult scriptwriters behind the film. Instead, the young generation is portrayed realistically, which means that the audience will quickly grow fond of the characters with their incredible chemistry. Kube also praises the effective editing and the loving and enthusiastic performance of the child actors. In conclusion, he draws that the beautiful, realistic and clever end comes a little too early.

On the first weekend, the film grossed around US $ 21 million in North America , surpassing previous box-office forecasts and taking first place on the US cinema charts. A week later, Good Boys was able to enter third place on the German cinema charts with around 110,000 admissions, while in North America it reached second place with revenues of 11.75 million US dollars. Also in the third week, the film took a place in the top 3 of the German and North American cinema charts with 92,000 admissions and sales of 11.59 million US dollars. The production costs of 20 million US dollars are compared to a worldwide box office of 111.02 million US dollars, of which the film grossed 83.14 million in North America. In Germany, the film recorded 622,415 admissions, through which it was able to generate 4.87 million euros.
