Little Britain is a British sketch show by Matt Lucas and David Walliams . The title is a mixture of the terms "Little England" and "Great Britain". The show was first broadcast as a radio broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2001 , and in 2003 the first season of eight episodes aired on the digital TV channel BBC 3. So far, another three seasons with six episodes each have appeared. All episodes are also released on DVD . In Germany, the series is broadcast on Comedy Central and, since 2016, on One . In Austria, ORF is currently broadcasting, in Switzerland SRF two.
concept
The program consists of a collection of short skits about the everyday eccentricity of the British, which are loosely connected to one another by the narrator. For this purpose, a number of different figures are shown grotesquely exaggerated. These figures mostly embody marginalized social groups and the abnormalities of the “little man”, which is why faecal humor is a strong stylistic device . The comments of the Off -Sprechers are frequently absurd from, put forward in earnest and scientific manner nonsense information about the UK . In the scenes shown, people often make fun of “ political correctness ”. Another hallmark of the skits is that they consist of series with recurring actors and that the punch lines are always built up according to similar patterns, with slight variations in the sequence for loosening up.
The comments are spoken in the original version by Tom Baker , who played the doctor in the British cult series Doctor Who from 1974 to 1981 and is therefore one of the greats in British television history. Some of his comments refer to this role as well.
Authors
David Walliams and Matt Lucas wrote Sacha Baron Cohen's Ali G as early as 2000 . Show and can also be seen in the feature film Shaun of the Dead .
Matt Lucas also voiced the character "Cardinal One" from the controversial cartoon series Popetown and played Tweedlede and Tweedledum in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland .

The particularly caring and friendly Lou lives in Herby with Andy, who is in a wheelchair . The rigid and somewhat stupid-looking Andy is given a choice in almost every sketch and usually decides on the opposite of a statement originally made (before the scene), which he now insists on. Lou bows to this decision after unsuccessful objection. Shortly thereafter, Andy always revises his decision and Lou has to fix the consequences.
Another scheme of the Andy and Lou sketches is that Lou puts Andy in a situation that Andy has little desire to do. While Lou is briefly distracted, Andy gets out of his wheelchair, adjusts things the way he wants them, and always returns to his wheelchair before Lou can devote himself to him again. Lou usually comments casually about the changed situation, but can never explain how it came about.
During their discussions, Lou usually quotes an earlier statement Andy's eloquent expression, which is in no relation to his otherwise dull speech. Especially in the later seasons of the series it comes to light that Andy is not handicapped at all (he just takes advantage of Lou) and that he is actually much more intelligent than it seems.
The names are a nod to Andy Warhol and Lou Reed .

Daffyd Thomas

The overweight Daffyd is of the opinion that he is the only homosexual in the Welsh village of Llandewi Breffi , but in every sketch he is confronted with the fact that almost only people of his orientation live in the village, which he does not accept or demonstratively ignores or . With each of these findings, he "out" himself as homophobic and express his prejudices. He also has a strong belief that he is despised by everyone and everyone because of his or her sexual orientation, although the opposite is the case. Vicky has several children from unknown fathers (alluding to the high teenage pregnancy rate in Great Britain), is mostly out with her gang and is well informed about the intimacies of everyone in the "scene". She uses these stories as a distraction when accused of any wrongdoing or crime. The hallmark is her extremely fast flow of speech, coupled with her scene-oriented phrases.

Sebastian Love and Prime Minister Michael Stevens

Sebastian is young, gay, expressive and the secretary of Prime Minister Michael Stevens, with whom he fell in love from the first moment. Kenny Craig is a hypnotist who hypnotizes people in a variety of situations in order to gain personal advantage. In most of the sketches he repeatedly achieves the most absurdly comical successes combined with a very sloppy hypnotization technique, which he carries out more and more sloppily in his often repeated hypnoses and which should actually not work at all.
For example, he hypnotizes his entire audience, makes them believe they have seen the most amazing show of their life, and then reads the rest of the performance through a book. Or he lets eyewitnesses forget that they saw him as the cause of the accident. The joke later also consists of the fact that a comedian would be so bad that Kenny can instill completely paradoxical memories in his victim, just not that this one comedian was funny. With his mother, on the other hand, it sometimes appears as if he is not in a position to really hypnotize someone.

Ray McCooney owns a hotel in Scotland that he runs with "his children" (a few short stature ). Marjorie is the leader of the self-help group "Fat Fighters", a parody of the " Weight Watchers " who is overweight herself. She regularly insults the participants in the group, but does not spurn even lavish food. She seems to lead the courses of the "Fat Fighters" mainly out of the motive to distract herself from her own obesity by rising above other obese people.
For example, she acts as if she could not understand the Indian Meera with the best will in the world, even though she has a strong Indian accent, but speaks English (or German) understandably and, apart from her traditional Indian clothing, has completely adapted to the British way of life . For example, in response to the question about food that triggers cravings, Marjorie writes "curry" on her flipchart instead of Meera's actual answer (fish and chips) and comments with: "Must be something that we don't have here ...".
Another victim of Marjorie is Pat, one of the heavyweights of the support group. Marjorie humiliates Pat in every sketch, because it always increases, and advises her to eat dust more often. When Pat lost weight in a sketch, Marjorie feeds Pat with éclairs so that she can gain weight again. Over time, Pat develops a relationship with Paul and becomes pregnant, leading to further pseudo-caring advice from Marjorie. The approximately 50-year-old Tanya is also belittled by Marjorie because of her age.
Another running gag is that Marjorie always says you should eat dust because it does not contain any calories and consequently you cannot gain weight in spite of the excessive consumption of dust.

Emily Howard and Florence

Emily is an extremely implausible transvestite in 1900 style ladies' costumes and lives in the English coastal town of Old Haven. He is sometimes recognized by old work colleagues or drinking buddies, to which he replies indignantly: “I don't know someone with this name! I'm a laaaady! ” He was once a regular for the English soccer team Queens Park Rangers . From the second season onwards, her best friend Florence (see below) comes along, who is sometimes disguised as a baby by her and, with her pronounced mustache, is particularly bad to think of as a lady.

Mr. Mann is the robotic-looking regular customer of Roy and Margaret's specialty store , whose range seldom stays the same, sometimes it's a toy store, sometimes a bookstore, sometimes a costume store. Mr. Mann initially expresses his wishes in great detail and overly precise or far too diffuse (e.g. “Do you have books?” In a bookstore), but then stiffens himself into increasingly absurd details. He overwhelms Roy, who calls for his wife Margaret in the back room, who cannot appear because she has no arms and no legs, but promptly has a solution ready. However, Mr. Mann almost always finds a reason to decline this too and leaves the store without buying anything, even if the item is 100% what he wanted. The fitting of a disguise as the British comedian David Baddiel was represented by the appearance of the same from the dressing room (season 3, episode 5). From season 3, Desiree and Roman appear as new characters at Spa Hill Grange . Desiree, who is also overweight, is the former Miss Botswana , and Roman is Bubbles' ex-husband. Desiree and Bubbles settle their disputes with one another through violent arguments in a stripped state, which Roman likes a lot because he has a fetish for body fat.

Annoyed and bitter Carol works in a bank (2nd season) or a travel agency (3rd season) or in a hospital (USA / season 4). She always responds to her customers' questions by (supposedly) typing them into her computer, usually negating the request and referring to the computer's decision. Linda Flint is a student advisor at a UK university and is very organized. Mrs. Emery is an always friendly elderly lady who is prone to waterfall-like incontinence in public. This mishap usually happens to her when she meets a friend and has a chat with her. At the beginning the conversation always starts quite harmlessly, e.g. B. in a supermarket or at the post office. The acquaintance is happy to meet Mrs. Emery. In the course of the conversation you can hear a loud splashing noise and see that Mrs. Emery is urinating uncontrollably. At the end of each episode in Season 1, Ian and Ian, both fat men with equally thick sweaters and beards, try to break a record, but regularly fail because of a "little thing"; Examples:

Little Britain Abroad
The characters leave Great Britain under the name Little Britain Abroad . Carol Beer ends up as a tour guide in Spain , Marjorie Dawes visits a new group of the "Fat Fighters" in the USA. Dafydd Thomas travels to Greece , to the island of Mykonos and Lou and Andy want to go to Disneyworld Florida . A special feature is that many characters get new features, such as the actually conservative Maggie Blackamoor. In the German dubbed version, Dirk Bach and Hella von Sinnen lend a few characters their voices. The two episodes were broadcast for the first time on April 6, 2008 on German television on Comedy Central.
Little Britain USA
In 2008 a spin-off called Little Britain USA was produced, which was shown on ORF 1 as a German-language first broadcast from February 12, 2009 . From November 1, 2009, the dubbed version was also shown on Comedy Central.
Some of the characters known from the British version appear again, for example Lou and Andy, Sebastian Love, Marjorie Dawes, Vicky Pollard, Carol Beer and Daffyd Thomas, the “only gay in the village”, who is now the “only gay” on campus ”. But there are also new characters, such as two gym buddies in a testosterone intoxication or Bing Gordyn, the eighth man on the moon, who harasses his disinterested environment with lunar stories. The characters are again played by Matt Lucas and David Walliams.
A DVD with the 6 episodes of Little Britain USA has already been released in the USA. This was also published in Germany in 2010. For the German version, the regular cast could be engaged again (Kalkofe, Welke and Schoenfelder). The cast will not return to a second season. This was announced by HBO in July 2009.

- Game Republic developed the video game Little Britain: The Game for the PlayStation 2 and PC . The player can slip into the roles of a few selected characters from the series and should be entertained through more or less meaningful mini-games. The characters' texts and dialogues were spoken by Matt Lucas and David Walliams themselves. A German version of the game is not available because the USK refused to release it. In October 2007 the PC version was indexed by the Federal Inspectorate for Media Harmful to Young People (BAnz No. 204 of October 31, 2007), because it classified a game sequence as discriminatory, in which the "character portrayed people as clichéd homosexuals are, drive around and hit the ground ”(BPjM Aktuell 4/2007, p. 20).
