Pomplamoose is an American indie music duo with the multi-instrumentalists Jack Conte and Natalie Dawn Knutsen, who perform under the name Nataly Dawn . The band was formed in the summer of 2008 and in 2009 sold their songs about 100,000 times on the Internet.

etymology

The band's name is derived from the French word pamplemousse ( grapefruit ), but also includes the English word "moose", which means "elk".

Recordings and performances

Despite the band's presence, which consists mainly of video uploads via YouTube and MySpace , and despite the few live performances, Pomplamoose has reached over 1 million subscribers on their YouTube channel (as of June 2020). The musical group first gained widespread recognition when their video rendition of the song Hail Mary was featured on the YouTube homepage. The duo produced Julia Nunes' music album, released in February 2010 .

Your videos usually take the form of a "video song", a medium that Jack Conte defines with two rules:

  1. You can also hear what is shown. (No playback of the instruments or the voice)
  2. If it can be heard, it can also be seen at one point in the video. (No hidden noises)

On April 11, 2010, the band was interviewed on the US radio station National Public Radio's All Things Considered . Conte discussed the "glitter-free" way they record their videos:

“I guess I kinda don't like how there's such a pedestal for music culture and especially for band culture, it just feels fake; it feels like smoke and mirrors. I feel like music doesn't have to be like that. It can be something that's very normal and very accessible. "( Jack Conte )

“I think I don't like that there is such a pedestal for music culture and especially for band culture, it feels wrong; it feels more like smoke and mirrors. I think music doesn't have to be like that. It can be something that is very normal and very accessible. ”( Jack Conte )

April 2010 her cover version of “Mr. Sandman ”by The Chordettes in a commercial for Toyota's Avalon . The commercial took place in an Art Deco train station. The A1 Telekom Austria used the song as well for their Xmas spot in the fall 2011th

In September 2010 Pomplamoose took on a collaborative piece with Allee Willis , which was called "Jungle Animal". Willis contacted the duo after hearing Pomplamoo's cover of the Earth, Wind and Fire song "September" and offered to write the new song.

During the 2010 Christmas season, Pomplamoose appeared in various commercials in their style of their YouTube videos for Hyundai , playing their version of popular Christmas carols such as " Adeste fideles ", " Jingle Bells ", " Up on the Housetop " and "Deck the Halls" .

Pomplamoose started with a weekly interactive webcast "Hey, It's Pomplamoose: A Show about Pomplamoose and Other Things" in 2011.

Solo careers

Both Conte and Dawn maintain their solo careers; they publish videos on YouTube and songs on the iTunes Store . Conte has recorded two EPs - Sleep in Color and Nightmares and Daydreams . He published it together with the collection VideoSongs Volume I on the iTunes Store. Conte's use of Electro Harmonix musical equipment has been featured in several videos by the company. Conte's first notable appearance in mainstream media was when he voiced the "teenage boy" character in the popular video game The Sims 2 . Conte first received widespread attention when his video Yeah Yeah Yeah was featured on YouTube's homepage. The video, which was animated in stop-motion , received 800,000 views (as of January 2012). The majority of his new music has appeared as singles on YouTube in the form of "VideoSongs" (explained in the article Recordings and Performances).

Critics have rated Conte's solo career positively. They praised moving passages from the lyrics from Sleep in Color, the creative communication of his "VideoSongs" and his tendency to create his own niche in the Internet music market. However, the Amplifier magazine criticized Contes music statement, "Hints of Conor Oberst , Radiohead , Patrick Watson , contemporary punk rock (screamo), radio power pop, and incalculable other singer-songwriters are more than borrowed, making for a short mishmash of electro rock . "" Traces of Conor Oberst , Radiohead , Patrick Watson , Screamo , Power Pop and countless other singer-songwriters are more than borrowed, which makes for a short electro-rock mishmash. "
