Julia Nunes (born January 3, 1989 ) is a singer-songwriter from Fairport , New York . Her musical career made substantial progress online through her videos of covered and own songs on YouTube , in which she sings - often with several voices - and accompanies herself on guitar , melodica , piano or ukulele .

Life

Nunes was born on January 3, 1989 in a family of musicians in New York: Her father is a pianist and composes children's songs, one of her grandfathers composed Portuguese Fado music, the other was a jazz pianist. Nunes began taking piano lessons at the age of seven until she switched to guitar as a teenager . She has been composing her own songs since she was 14; She has been playing the ukulele since 2005, as well as guitar and melodica. In a comment on one of her YouTube videos, she points out that she has both US and Portuguese citizenship .

Works

YouTube videos

Nunes became famous for her "entertaining and lavishly edited" videos. known on YouTube These include her own songs, but also covers of some of her favorite bands such as Say Anything , Spoon , The Beatles , The Beach Boys and Destiny's Child . Her own songs have already appeared twice on the main page of YouTube under her user name jaaaaaaa , which, according to her own statement, came about by chance when she pressed the A key after the J key on a PC keyboard - the first and last letters of her first name - several times .

Molly Ringwald reported on Good Morning America on August 30, 2008 that she picked up the ukulele after seeing Julia Nunes on YouTube: "I've always wanted to play the ukulele and she (Nunes) inspired me to do it."

Left Right Wrong

Her first CD Left Right Wrong contains exclusively her own compositions and was released in the summer of 2007 as an independent production by JuNu Music ( ASCAP ) on Nunes' label Rude Butler Music. As a result of her YouTube success, Nunes signed a distribution contract for Left Right Wrong with Burnside Distribution Corporation in June 2008 , so that the album is now also available in normal stores. The twelve tracks (ten of them studio and two live recordings) were recorded with guitar and voice only, without the overdubs that characterize their YouTube videos. A video of her song Into the Sunshine has been viewed more than two million times on YouTube .

I Wrote Thesis

Her second CD, I Wrote These , was released on October 15, 2008. Apart from the track Sugar Coats , which was created together with her friend and musician Kirk Stevens, the CD again contains only Nunes' own songs. Like their first CD, I Wrote These was released by their label Rude Butler Music, the copyright is held by JuNu Music. The album was recorded and mixed by Peter Kobor and Chris Roberson at Studio Arts Entertainment and Hilltop Recording in Greenwich, New York . Most of the tracks are recorded purely acoustically, with a few songs being accompanied by a full band, including Todd Haviland on bass and Dave Harris as drummer. Guest singers are Dan Gocek, Kirk Stevens, and Andy Martin; Whistling , snapping fingers and beatboxing serve as additional accompaniment . I Wrote These was mastered by Steve Forney at Linden Oaks Studios in Rochester, New York.

Trivia

In December 2008 Nunes participated in the Vlogbrothers' Project4Awesome . Instead of asking users on YouTube to donate to charity, she put a hand-knitted hat for sale on eBay and pledged to double the proceeds of the Lupus Foundation of America (a non-profit promoting the research and treatment of lupus erythematosus ) to donate. After a bidding dispute, the hat went to Kenny West , a Philadelphia musician, for $ 1,250 . When she realized what amount she had to raise out of pocket, she asked her viewers on YouTube for support and promised to donate $ 500 out of pocket. In January 2009, Nunes made a donation of $ 3,107.85 to the Lupus Foundation.
