Brian Williams (2012)

Brian Douglas Williams (born May 5, 1959 in Elmira (New York) ) is an American television journalist. Since 2004 he has succeeded Tom Brokaw as the presenter of the NBC Nightly News . Until then, Williams was NBC's chief correspondent at the White House , hosting The News with Brian Williams on CNBC and MSNBC . In 2007 Time Magazine named Williams one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. In 2015, Williams was suspended and transferred to cable news broadcaster MSNBC.

Williams dropped out of college for an internship in the government of Jimmy Carter. He has since received honorary doctorates from several universities.

He lives in New Canaan, Connecticut with his wife Jane Stoddard Williams. The couple have two children.

The actress Allison Williams (* 1988) is his daughter.

Life

Brian was the youngest of four children in a well-off Irish Catholic family. He grew up in New Jersey, first in Ridgewood and later in Middletown , where he graduated from a Catholic prep school . He studied first at Brookdale Community College , then at the private CUA in Washington, DC , where he got a job in the White House and dropped out for it. He then enrolled at George Washington University .

He started his radio career in 1981 at KOAM-TV in Pittsburg (Kansas) . The following year he returned to Washington and in 1985 moved to WCAU (then a CBS subsidiary) in Philadelphia as a correspondent for New Jersey. From 1987, Williams worked for WCBS in New York City. In 1993 he moved to NBC News.

In 2003 he reported on the Iraq war .

The Bates College awarded him in 2005 a honorary doctorate .

From 2011 to 2013 he hosted a weekly broadcast from the Rockefeller Center .

For misrepresenting a reporter experience during the Iraq war, NBC also reviewed Williams' reports on other events in 2015. Because he himself became a news item, Williams temporarily withdrew as a presenter. NBC suspended him for six months with no earnings. At first it remained open whether Williams would return as a presenter of the main news show after his suspension. In mid-June, the decision was made that Williams would not return to the main NBC news, but would switch to the sister station MSNBC , where it would, among other things, moderate breaking news from August.
