history
In 1731, the Connecticut Colonial Administration established the Canaan Parish District as a religious district in northwest Norwalk, Connecticut and northeast Stamford, Connecticut. Initially, this only served to simplify administration. The city of New Canaan was founded in 1801.
Until the American Revolutionary War , New Canaan was dominated by agriculture. After the war, the city became famous for shoe production. When it was connected to the rail network in 1868, wealthy New York City residents discovered the place for themselves and built summer residences. Lewis Lapham, Texaco founder and great-grandfather of Lewis H. Lapham ( Harper's Magazine ) spent his summers here.
The nickname "Next Station to Heaven" goes back to an article by Will Kirk in Messenger from 1890.
